HEYURIZENS, LEND ME YOUR EARS!
I am a 23 year old man. I don't have a regular job, my mom and dad are my only RL friends and I don't belong to any social groups on-line or have SNS accounts. THAT BEING SAID, I have a new goal in life:
My stature is decidedly masculine, so I cannot be called "cute" by any definition of the word. But I want to use my features to become THE HOTTEST SHUT-IN THERE IS!

I come to you to strategize and to ask important information such as:
- What is considered hawt nowadays? Is Zac Effron still the standard?
- What muscles make you the hawtest? How do I get abs?
- HOW DO I INTO BEING HAWT?
And teh like.

I await your advice with b8d breath. :-)

the simple truth is that Balsamic Sauce-sama is a God who currently resides in the fluffy cloud heaven, surrounded by angels and a constant chorus that sings of His deeds and sometimes He descends upon us to bless our eyes with one of His works

Lounge@Heyuri
Hi Heyuri,

Is it common to see people online complaining about how other people "take the easy way out"? If so, why?

To elaborate, I'll start with an example from Minecraft. It is possible to change certain "gamerules" that affect mechanics in "Survival Mode". One of them is "keepInventory", which makes it so when your character dies, the items in your current inventory are not dropped but kept on you when you respawn. This makes it so if you die to an enemy, you do not have to return to the place you died or start over.

By default, keepInventory is set to off, meaning items are dropped on death. Some players choose to turn it on: their reason being it makes the game more "enjoyable" to them. However, some online commenters screech at this notion, crying out "Cheater!", "No Skill!1!1", "Why don't you just use "Creative" and give yourself all the endgame gear?!?!1!!1!one" and other related expressions. I would like your best guesses as to why this happens.

Another example: I am certain you are familiar with FromSoftware's famous series "Dark Souls" and their latest game "Elden Ring". In those games, you are able to use an ability to create a computer-controlled ally that can help you fight difficult enemies (commonly referred to as "summons"). In forums for these games, a fairly frequent reply to a post about enjoying the game with summons has the general theme of "You are a no-skill shitter. Why did you spend $60 to have the game play itself for you? You should play only with melee weapons like us, because that's what Miyazaki intended." Do note that "Miyazaki" refers to the games' director, who would have likely had a say in what mechanics were included in each game and how strong they were relative to other options.

A final example, though slightly controversial: the topic of "AI" """art""" posted on the internet. I do not like to use the term "art", as it carries certain value biases that seem extremely prevalent online. I will choose to refer to these as "images" or "drawings", regardless of whether they utilized "AI" or used software created prior to 2012. I will also extend this condition to physical media, including sketches with graphite on paper.

Now, I am sure you have noticed an abundance of "images" and "drawings" posted by people online with the help of "AI" software. A significant portion (though I do not claim they are a majority) are posted with the general theme "Check out this cool thing I made with AI! This is really fun! Does anyone else like using this software?". To which the sentiment of a common reply is something along the lines of "Kill yourself AI Bro-tuber. You have no skill or talent, and you didn't put in the effort or hard work to "learn" the fundamentals of """art""", so stop calling yourself an """artist""" because everything you do is WORTHLESS. There is nothing for you to be proud of, and-" I have cut this excerpt short, but do note that it may go on for several paragraphs. It is also far more articulate than a typical reply, which is generally less than a few words long and contains the word "slop" in some form (I have another thought about how repeated use of that term and others like it have made it more difficult to communicate clearly on many websites, but that is a post for another time.)

Now the original post has not made a claim about "art", effort or cultural values, though it does claim that the process of using "AI" software for image generation is "fun" and "cool". Yet the reply has a common accusation of "no skill or hard work", as though an image or drawing can only be "valuable" if and only if there is "effort" or "skill" involved, and that any method which does not explicitly require these is something worthy of "shame" and "derision". This can also be extended to "tracing", an old method where a drawing is created by overlaying a blank sheet of paper over another piece and making pencil strokes based on where the other piece is darkest, also commonly derided as "Cheating!!1!111".

An easy answer is that people on the internet have tendency to be incredible stupid (read: complete fucktards), but I wish to know your answer Heyuri. Have you noticed something similar on ther websites?

Yes, what you’re describing is very common online, and it taps into a few deep-seated social dynamics—especially around effort, identity, and cultural norms around "authenticity" and "merit." Here’s a breakdown of why this pattern shows up so often:

1. The Morality of Effort: "You Didn't Suffer, So It Doesn't Count"

A lot of people conflate difficulty with virtue. If someone put in hundreds of hours into learning something, overcoming frustration, and failing repeatedly to get good at it, that struggle becomes central to their self-worth. They earned their achievement—and that sense of earned value becomes deeply personal.

When someone else enjoys a similar result—or just enjoys themselves—by skipping those painful parts (like turning on keepInventory, using summons, or generating images), it can feel like an invalidating shortcut to those who labored to get there.

The reaction is not just “You did it differently,” it’s “You’re devaluing what I did.

2. Cultural Gatekeeping and Identity Protection

Certain communities form around an identity: "We're the real gamers," "We're real artists," "We beat bosses solo," etc.

When someone uses a tool or option that seems to bypass the traditional struggle, it can trigger gatekeeping. These users often feel a sense of ownership over the culture and start policing others to protect the boundaries of what "counts."

This is especially noticeable in places where hardship is worn like a badge—think Soulsborne players, traditional artists, or old-school survival gamers. Anything that undermines that hardship (like summons, AI tools, or toggling an easier mechanic) threatens their identity as “one of the ones who did it the real way.”

3. The Myth of a “Pure” or “Intended” Way

A frequent argument you mentioned—“That’s not how the game was meant to be played” or “That’s not real art”—hinges on this idea that there is a singular, correct, pure way to do something. People love to appeal to the supposed “intent” of the creator (e.g., Miyazaki) or some sacred ideal of artistic labor.

This idea often ignores the fact that:

- Developers include mechanics like summons on purpose.
- Minecraft's gamerules are part of the game’s flexibility by design.
- Artists throughout history have traced, used references, and leveraged whatever tools existed in their time.

But those facts are inconvenient when someone is trying to create a hierarchy where they sit at the top.

4. Scarcity of Recognition in an Attention Economy

Online spaces are saturated. It’s hard to stand out. So, when someone posts an AI-generated image or a victory using in-game tools and gets attention, praise, or upvotes, it can cause resentment among people who spent years honing skills and feel they’re being overlooked.

It becomes, “Why should they get recognition when I worked harder?” That’s not always irrational—but it’s often misdirected frustration, projected as contempt.

5. Misery Loves Company: The Suffering Is the Point (Sometimes)

Some people internalize the suffering they went through as the point of the activity. This happens a lot in both hardcore gaming and traditional creative disciplines. When someone bypasses that, it can feel like cheating at a moral level, not just a mechanical one.

This is why you get emotional, almost moralizing language like:

- "You should be ashamed."
- "You have no soul."
- "It’s not real if you didn’t suffer."

It’s irrational, but emotionally powerful. These people aren’t just defending a method—they’re defending the narrative of suffering-as-worth.

6. The Internet Encourages Extremes and Performative Judgment

On top of all this, the internet just magnifies everything. You're not talking to one friend saying "I prefer playing Souls solo," you're in front of an invisible crowd, often trying to out-signal others in your in-group.

Mockery becomes exaggerated.
Gatekeeping becomes hostile.
Disdain becomes a meme ("slop," "skill issue," "AI shitter").

It’s not necessarily about a real belief—it’s about performing allegiance to a certain tribe.

So, yes, you’re observing a real and repeating pattern.

At its core, it’s about people defending their identity, effort, and worldview in a digital world where traditional forms of value (like skill, labor, or authorship) are being blurred or challenged by flexible tools and inclusive options.

When people say, “You took the easy way out,” what they often mean is:
You didn't suffer like I did, so your enjoyment threatens my belief that suffering is what made my achievement worthwhile.

That doesn’t mean their suffering was pointless. It just means they haven’t reconciled the idea that value doesn’t have to come from pain, and joy doesn’t have to be earned like a paycheck.

Let me know if you want me to break down any part further—there’s a lot to unpack here, especially in the cultural and psychological layers.
