I have a lot of free time at the moment, but I can't get myself to focus on reading at home. So far, I think it's hard to read in a café with too much light and too much space between the tables, but it helps if you can get into a far corner. I find the library way too quiet to read in, so I definitely like for there to be some light chatter as background noise. Any thoughts?

I've heard it said that the counterculture of the 1960s was a war on technocracy. My thinking is that the movement never made much headway in dismantling the technocracy and instead became integrated into it. It's the typical thing of rebellion getting absorbed into the mainstream culture. The technocracy merely changed from a mostly conservative one to a mostly liberal one.

This reminds me of something interesting I read on Foucalt here:
https://www.compactmag.com/article/the-bleak-genius-of-michel-foucault/

"Tuesday marks the 40th anniversary of the death of Michel Foucault. Four decades since complications from AIDS brought his career to a premature end, the French philosopher—a role he both embraced and pushed away—continues to top rankings of the most-cited scholars in the humanities. This is to the chagrin of conservative critics of higher education, for whom his influence is synonymous with the perversions, figurative as well as literal, of the academy and of modern life. His vast authority is equally lamented by many orthodox Marxists, who hold him responsible for the shift away from class as the central fact of social organization and the proper locus of radical activism—and toward boutique “identitarian” causes and the emancipation of the self from normative structures of all kinds.

To even mention Foucault these days is to get tangled in these crisscrossing lines of critique. Not only that, but it is increasingly difficult to assess his body of work on its own terms, independent of the institutional structures that bear the imprint of his ideas, albeit in bowdlerized form. From third-rate college courses in which students who can barely read a novel are taught to “problematize” and “interrogate” this or that classic; to dormitory sexual-safety workshops that reject “normativities” and welcome subaltern “sexualities” (always with the silly pluralizations); to sundry h.r. trainings and corporate Pride messages that present even more rudimentary versions of the same rhetoric and conceptual framework—our institutional landscape can often look like it was designed by the Frenchman.

But if so, then it is all the more reason to consider these discourses in the light of Foucault’s own insights into the workings of discursive power. There, in his writings and lectures, we find a philosopher of unquestionable genius. Michel Foucault was perhaps the closest figure the 20th century offered to the European ideal of the Thinker Who Had Read Everything. He philosophized with a healthy and daring disregard for disciplinary boundaries, drawing freely—and commandingly—from history, theology, classics, literature, jurisprudence, political economy, anthropology, medicine, and psychiatry, among other branches of study.

Unlike most of his academic imitators and putative heirs, moreover, Foucault was capable of crafting sparkling, highly ironic prose (“my aim is to examine the case of a society … which speaks verbosely of its own silence”). Roger Scruton, of all people, was a fan of his style. And it is right and just that Foucault should be posthumously crowned the citation king of the humanities: After all, he inaugurated a systematic and highly original science of modern power, one that was bound to catalyze new fields of inquiry, even if many of those who took them up weren’t up to the task. This new science benefited greatly from Foucault’s refusal to be confined to philosophical abstraction, from his limitless curiosity about power at the most concrete and granular levels.

His, however, was a bleak genius. The normative and metaphysical void at the heart of his science of power created the conditions for the bastardization of his thought. The result is that today, some of the most powerful institutions in our society deploy his concepts and vernacular to perpetuate themselves in a manner that is downright, well, Foucauldian. Or put another way, Foucault’s ingenious methods for analyzing power have now emerged as but one more strategy for the maintenance and expansion of existing institutional power. This, even as these institutions themselves remain susceptible to his critique of what he called the “devious and supple mechanisms of power.”

damn.
>>
There wasn't a single counterculture in the 60s. There were lots of different movements with different aims and ideas with most being contradictory. But yeah, everything else you said is true. Stuff that's at the fringe slowly gets colonized by the mainstream. Its what makes the system so insidious is its capable of taking its most fanatic enemies (Che Guevara) and commercializing and neutralizing them (Che shirts) or turning them into entertainment (Saddam memes from like 20 years ago).

>>11769
If you were to show Focuault today how his ideas have been institutionalized, he'd probably say he doesn't really have the right to tell people not to use his work that way and it wouldn't even matter if he did. He took the death of the author seriously. He saw his books and ideas as tools that anyone should be free to use for their own purposes instead of him imposing or dictating a bunch of ideas or having to refer back to what he said on any given issue the way communists do with Marx. Foucault was a Nieztschean. He didn't want to be an anchor holding us back but for people to go ahead and create their own movements and ideas with his work. Pretty much the opposite of the bleak nihilism morons accuse him of.

I used Vista deeeeep into Win7's lifespan. Not even SP1 lol, which I updated to very late. Only reason I even updated to 7 is because my Vista install just stopped booting one day, so I grabbed a 7 ISO and upgraded. biggrin

I've seen way too many machines absolutely choke and die on it (one of my IRL friends had the absolute worst Vista machine I'd ever seen, just a balls slow, super unstable piece of shit), but my machine ran great. A lot of it is the massively inflated system requirements vs XP (like 10x the disk and 8x the RAM for a useful system), but a lot is shitty drivers from early in the OS's lifespan.
What a fucking mess of a release...
>>
Former Mint and Arch user. Currently on Windows 10. I did try Windows 11, it was complete shit. I'll continue using Windows 10 even if supports dies out next year.

I'd use Linux if more softwares supported Linux and also if I didn't need it for projects.

older versions of Firefox still work on XP but it's a pain in the ass to browse teh modern bloated interwebs with so little RAM, so I don't use it often, for dedicated internet browsing I use a lappy that came with Winblows 7 already installed. Still, I'll stick with XP-tan for a looooong time because my drawing tablet is ancient (from 2001) and they never made any drivers for it that work past XP.

>>114330
It's a shame, I really liked Vista's aero interface, but the bad drivers, bad compatibility and unstable performance was too much at the time.

AT ATTENTION HEYURIZEN!
We were too blind! The PENIS Kingdom ammassed their forces and has started a full on assault on Heyuri!
We were all caught completely off guard, but thanks to the efforts of our secret agents we were able to snatch a piece of their plans, we need to act fast and come up with a plan, our fellow heyurizen are dying by the minute!

Here's a breakdown:
1- their attacks are currently focusing on the LOLI and JP fronts, as you can see they are attempting to capture Rapecity and NotCP, the wealthiest cities in the LOLI EMPIRE, to feed their warmachine most likely, furthermore their efforts to conquest 日本語が話せません proves only one thing: they intend to bend the whole country to their will so that JP becomes just another puppet state

2- their secondary objective is the capture of the WINS ARCHIVE in oekaki, we CANNOT ALLOW THIS! unfortunately for us Oekaki is wholly unprepared for this attack and the disgusting PENISES are advancing by the minute, slaughtering innocent wins!

3- Our intelligence, though incomplete, has given us an approximate number of their forces and... it does not look good for us...
we counted at least 150k PENISTANKS, 200k VAGINAPLANES and there have been concerning images of secret never-before-seen weapons

4- Thankfully the strength of the ANIME FAPCIRCLE scared them off enough to build fortifications instead of attacking, the governor of the ANIME FAPCIRCLE informed us that he can spare 150k troops and 50k OPPAITANKS for the defense of Heyuri

Kaguya is currently unreachable so we cannot rely on his wisdom and so... the war council is in session!
