An interesting take I've seen is that (if we take America as a prime example,) the 20th Century was divided into two parts representing phases of capitalism, the earlier part being a high point for 'producer' capitalism, industrial growth and material reform (like the New Deal) and that the later part of the Century was the final emergence of 'consumer' capitalism with the transition to a service economy, industrial outsourcing, and cultural reform (like the 'Swinging' Sixties or the Counterculture).

One very interesting strain of thought I've encountered as part of this perspective is the idea that the emergence of modern youth culture, counterculture, and all the various subcultures, rather than being an act of rebellion was merely an act of market segmentation. Market segmentation is a key idea here which basically just means that different people have different wants and thus the things they are sold and the style of marketing towards them must vary. PepsiCo is noted to have revolutionized this concept with their idea of the 'Pepsi Generation':

'The epic battle of Coca-Cola and Pepsi is the best-known illustration of the change in which uniformity quite literally gave way to diversity. Over the first half of the 20th century, Coke built an unrivaled dominance of the once-localized soft-drink market-
place: it offered a single product that was supposed to be consumable by people in every walk of life: rich and poor, old and young, men and women and in every part of the country. It was the "brand beyond competition," with a single, zealously guarded formula and a single container size that was supposed to be adequate for everyone. Pepsi's rise during the 1960s, more than any other single event, signaled the arrival of the segmented market. By appealing to youthfulness and the young as a philosophy and a people apart from the values associated with Coca-Cola, Pepsi transformed itself quickly into a competitor to be reckoned with. The
ensuing "Cola Wars" have had much less to do with the rival companies' actual products than with the "psychic benefit" promised by each, with the war of symbolism in which both have invested so much.'

The idea then is that the underlying concept of market segmentation behind the notion of the 'Pepsi Generation' spread to other groups and towards other goals but was ultimately not a rebellion against consumer capitalism but an extension and unconscious application of its logic, because consumer capitalism naturally encourages cultural diversity in order that more people are appealed to and more products are sold:

"At its most advanced stages, according to business writers, this new
species of marketing is concerned with nothing other than the construction of consumer subjectivity, as manufacturers and advertisers attempt to call group identities into existence where before there had been nothing but inchoate feelings and common responses to pollsters' questions.

About this rather startling point Ted low is completely candid. "Segmentation based not on logistics or on some genuine product characteristics
but on demographic and psychographic groupings carved out of the general population is an invention of late twentieth-century American marketing," he writes.

The old fragmentation was based on realities [primarily geographic], but this new segmentation springs wholly from the imagination of the marketer. Pepsi and other such companies have been more interested in the term segment as a verb than as a noun. They have segmented markets, rather than merely responded to a market segment that already existed. There was no such thing as the Pepsi Generation until Pepsi created it."

It is significant that the market element utilized in (or invented by)
Pepsi's ur-segmentation was youth. Before the 1960s, young people had
always been an established part of marketing and a staple image in advertising art, largely because of their still unformed tastes and their position as trend leaders. This was especially true in the 1920s. But during the 1960s, this standard approach changed. No longer was youth merely a "natural" demographic group to which appeals could be pitched:suddenly youth became a consuming position to which all could aspire.

"Pepsi not only recognized the existence of a demographic segment," observed marketing historians Stanley Hollander and Richard Germain,
"but also in essence manufactured a segment of those who wanted to feel
youthful." The conceptual position of youthfulness became as great an

Surely there are some countercultures that didn't originally start as some way to market a product, even if later on they got subsumed into it. You did mention something about punk and hippies becoming market symbols, which seems like how counterculture eventually "becomes" culture? I'm not sure where I'm going with this point....

There is something to be noted about internet subcultures that are commonly referred to as "aesthetics" or "-core" though. I'm not too familiar with this but I heard of words such as "cottagecore" and "old money" in the context of fashion...
>>
it depends on the counter cultures relation to capital and through that spectacle. hegemonic culture is the ideas of the prevailing order, the symbolic that maintains the order of capitalism. "counter culture" is as you say, maketing demographics, a relation to spectacle, thus the commodity, thus production, exactly because it exists to obscure relations of production, the real. the answer then is "counter-hegemonic culture" which exists entirely to bring to the front relations of production, to show that another world is possible, to demonstrate solidarity, and to build class consciousness. if you havent already (it seems like probably already have but for others interested in the topic) you should read some pieces from Gramscis prison notebooks, Society of the Spectacle by Debord, and Simulacra and Simulation by Baudrillard. Also, i havent read them yet but intend to, History and Class Conciousness by Lukacs and The System of Objects again by Baudrillard

A great book to read if you are specifically interested in the question of post 60s Counterculture specifically is the one I've pulled quotes from: "Conquest of Cool" by Thomas Frank.

p*do these days is practically what calling someone gay was in the 60s. life ruining stuff, and sanctioned by the greater society as a method of socially acceptable life-ruination.

Now that being gay is just something people shrug at, theyve moved on to doing the same thing, only with a different kink.
And people just throw around the accusation with the widest net possible because its just the same old character-assassination vector, repackaged for a more liberal age.
>>
>>173291
>p*do these days is practically what calling someone gay was in the 60s.
So is pedophilia gonna be acceptable in 40 years? :astonish:
>>
>>173293
who knows.

natural normalization tends to follow the pattern of
total demonization > taboo > humorizing > humanizing.
Hysteria typically reaches a zenith where it starts becoming a taboo (still life ruining, but a lot of people and people of privilege enjoy it secretly)
What comes with this is scandals and character assassination, while some pockets of persecuted pseudo counter cultures exist. western society is at this point.

Next comes humorizing, where scandals happen to such a high degree, and character assassinations become so frequent that people become desensitized to all of it, and stop caring, it eventually becomes a joke, you eventually have caricatures of the demonized seen as darkly humorous or goofy (epstein, diddy, etc).
after that Humanizing, the previously seen as darkly humorous creatures are then looked at as the same as everyone else, or at least seen as comically revolting perverts.

Its possible this could be 'corrected', a government could reverse the trend with tighter invasive legislations. Despite what proponents of the snow-ball effect may say, it is possible for it to stop or even be reversed (as seen with pornographic reforms in the 70s). The gay "liberation" was assisted by institutions and media, it's highly unlikely institutions and media would assist in normalizing this.

A more realistic view is that societies might degrade into nihilism and apathy (similar to china today or post-collapse soviet union) where people, aware of corruption by elites, simply care less about conventional morality and enjoy their vices somewhat freely, while laws - even extreme penalties such as death may still exist, the societies would be so overwhelmed with decline that policing pornographic crime or sexuality is too much to bother with.

Its highly unlikely to see it be "legalized" or "socially acceptable" wholesale in your lifetime.

But teh Japs had erotic lilgirls videos (gravure / IV) throughout teh entire 2000-2010s. :closed-eyes: It just were the niche, and everyone was, like, okayish. Because not so long ago it were obvious that "the younger the hotter", unlike today . The gay thing is so far from being in this state of just a niche, with all its populatization.
Also in Japan, it at some point existed in the state "it's OK to be fan of the pro/controllably (under ethical comittees supervision/censorship)-made content, but it's not OK to talk /look / etc IRL". I, personally, prefer it to be even this way than nothin.

First off, I'll say I have a big family :sweat3:

I have 3 sisters and 1 brother. My brother is the oldest and moved out for college when I was a kid, so I was mostly raised with my 3 sisters. My father was almost always away at work for long periods of time, and it wasn't uncommon for me to see him only once a week and just for a few hours.

This was further compounded by a few strange coincidences in my life. Firstly, that I live in a small town, where there are two primary and two middle schools. For each of them, one is a public school, and the other is a private boys-only sports/youth organization academy type thing.

This meant that due to the youth academy taking roughly half the boys, that the small primary and middle school was like, 75% girls. It was a running joke... and the class graduation photos are all mostly girls.

I was a very timid young boy, and afraid of sports. So I went to the public schools. I never made many friends. My only friend was a girl of my age in primary school, who was kind of tomboyish.

So at home I had only sisters and a mother, at school there was mostly girls, my only friend was a girl. As a young boy, I typically would go days with only interacting with girls, aside from the bus driver and my father once a weekend. (The teachers were also all girls except the PE teacher, but this is common everywhere)

I feel as though this has a major effect on my psychology and made me a weak and sensitive person, as I lacked male influences in my life

They say kids are incapable of being perverted, but if that's the case then how come I cajoled my cousins into dogpiling (in other words, facesitting) me when I was only five years old? I've been obsessed with ass since I was sentient enough to form memories.
>>
i also grew up around mostly women and i wonder how it affected me as well. i grew up around 2 sisters, my mother, and my grandmother. my father was always busy with work and my grandfather was very senile and didnt talk much. at my elementary school it was like 45/55 boys/girls so still leaning towards girls but not as much as in your case op. i dont have many ero stories other than one time at school we had to do this performance and it involved 2 of the guys getting on all fours while a girl stood on top.
