The old web was fun partially because of all those spam raids, DDoS'es and defaces. It wasn't that uncommon to enter the link one day and see a defaced main page or a completely fucked up catalog. It was always a thrill to see you favorite site got pwned! And some imageboard were wiped on weekly basis. Those were the days...

IDK if this source is legit but the 2020 code wasn't secure either and got hacked at least once, once the code was leaked due to the admin screwing something up.

Times have changed irreversibly, PHP was great for this because it was super accessible and a site's security heavily relied on the user's programming skills and knowledge on what to avoid doing. Back then lots more people were noobs and wrote insecure shit, thus their sites eventually got defaced by other more skilled noobs.
Nowadays it appears that web programming holds your hand a lot more, part of the reason so many people have a hate boner for PHP is because "it's insecure" when in reality it's fine, some people just didn't know how to use it properly and it's got itself this reputation.
