Note: The image is just a generic of Linear Predictive Coding I found, because new threads require an image, it doesn't have anything to with this proposal specifically, besides it being related to LPC in general.

In previous articles, I have discussed sources of error within the Wide-Band Harmonic Sinusoidal Modeling framework. Although I have not implemented most of the proposed improvements yet, I have derived closed-form solutions for several sources of error and have also provided theoretic justifications for the proposed solutions. Notably though, one source of error - named in the original paper - has still gone unaddressed.

This is the intrinsic error that results from the actual vocal tract filter varying continuously, whereas in the model we have assumed that it remains constant over given intervals. In the original WBHSM framework, these intervals were single pitch periods that were presumed to correspond to a sum of an infinite number of identical voice pulses. In my last proposed improvement on WBHSM, which I called Radiated Voice Pulse Modeling, I proposed solutions, in the form of corrective terms, to the errors that resulted from actual voice pulses not all being identical. However, each pulse was stilled modeled as having a constant vocal tract filter. Actually, theoretically it got worse since we were now considering the pulses whole radiated duration (up to a reasonable cut off point) as the pulse instead of a single period, although in practice the added error would not be significant because the proposed implementation only adds error terms that are in proportion to the differences between voice pulses.

This problem would seem unresolvable within WBHSM framework, since it is based on frequency-domain modeling, which is based on linear time-invariant filters with defined z-transfer function. Since the actual vocal tract filter varies continuously, it is not time-invariant and thus does not have a z-transfer function nor a frequency response. Thus my proposed solution involves hybridizing the WBHSM technique with another technique that can model time-variant filters, namely Linear Predictive Coding.

Linear Predictive Coding has a well-known deficiency, which is that it is an all-pole filter that does not model z-plane zeros. This would seem to negate much of the benefit of using it, but this is actually not true. Actually there's an alternative to converting the parallel filter to cascade filter, which is just to keep it as a parallel filter. How this can be done I will describe shortly. This may be preferred as I believe not all allophones can be modeled well by cascade filters. Furthermore, perhaps higher resonances can't be at all in general.

The parallel filter is just a sum of resonances, which are each linear-time invariant filters, thus it is also a linear-time invariant filter and thus also can be expressed as a z-transfer function. This can be done in practice by starting with a z-domain expression of the collective z-transfer function, in the form of a some of all the composite z-transfer functions. Then, each of the terms are refactored such that they all have an identical. Finally, all of the numerators can be summed. Much of the terms can then be combined since they are just constants times some power of z. The result is an IIR filter.

We can use the decomposition property of IIR filters that lets us turn one into an all-pole IIR filter and an FIR filter that represents the zeros. We do the inverse filtering step using the former. Finally, we add an additional step in the second WBHSM pass where we divide the spectrum by the latter's frequency response.

I think my plan for the system is mostly done now. I'll continue to read Sundberg's book and see if it leads me to think of anything interesting though. Current main problem is just to get around to implementing and testing many things that I haven't yet.

It's unbelievably hard losing a good friend. I had a friend online a while back who I was really close with, but sadly he was far too mentally unstable and eventually he starting seeing me as purely evil demon (quite literally I think). I suppose I'm lucky in that I can take solace in much of the fallout being out of my control, but I still miss the guy and think of him fairly often. To add my worthless opinion to the conversation in the thread, I will say that I haven't been enjoying Heyuri as much lately, and have barely been on it since the Bunkasai. Though I think this is just more related to a shift in my personal interests and preferred ways of killing time. I'm not against porn by any means, and I see its utility towards protecting site culture, but at the same time I feel like whenever I check this site the catalogue is more porn and less LULZ.
