I used to wear headphones pretty much all of the time.

I was neglecting work, that in principal I enjoyed but couldn't bring myself to do. I was years late on contracts I had already been paid for. I would have liked to live, to spend time outside with other people, to create, but if I tried I would feel overwhelming guilt, and tell myself I would sit down and work. Instead I would put on a podcast, or music, or play video games, or otherwise consume, and put off thinking about it to tomorrow. I did this for about ten years.

I was aware of what I was doing, but to sit with that knowledge was very uncomfortable. I consumed when I went out for groceries, while I cooked, when I was on the bus or just walking around, when I was in the shower, when I got into bed, and first thing again in the morning. My inner monologue atrophied. To take off the headphones and just sit felt like tugging on a bandage that has melded to a crusted wound.

I hope my case was extreme, but the truth is many people are so constantly stimulated that they cannot bare to sit with their thoughts. It is impossible to be fully human in such a state, with an entire branch of your thought process suppressed.

I'm not sure how I stopped. A close friend died and that certainly helped snap me out of the loop. I'm not sure I would have gotten out without an extreme event as catalyst.

Now I set time aside for music. I focus on it properly, like I used to when I got my first pair of headphones. I never wear them in public.

Isn't death literally the returning to whence you emerged, prior to life? And death is natural, and not very scary. So, how does this make a case against music? I've been long concerned with these types of behaviors.
I've spent the last three months listening to almost no music at all, except for two occasions I sat with some works of Scarlatti and Bach.
Unplugging in general will lend you so many things. Original and better thinking, and being able to see the world in a more honest light. They who claim the opposite is true for them are, most likely, zoomers who would get misdiagnosed with ADHD.

good to hear, funny enough I tend to wear headphones without listening to anything, just relying on the ANC to keep things quiet. I should probably accept more the surrounding noise, well the sounds of nature can be nice. Chatter, automobiles and TV/phone noise... much less.
