I think suffering is the only path to wisdom.
So how can I make myself suffer as much as possible, sans physical torture?
What are some grueling things in your life that I can adopt?
Thanks.

Not all suffering is equal, seeking pain for the sake of it is just machoism which is another from of hedonism.

chop wood and carry water. Those are the foundation of wisdom.

I like Heyuri because people on it actually have fun and are genuine and aren't terminally insecure post-ironic turbofaggots or perpetually butthurt moral crusaders.

It's honestly one of the last good websites on the internet.
>>
I like Heyuri because it's simply just a fun website. It's part of my daily fun browsing (which includes Something Awful and some other forums). On other sites, nobody seems to enjoy themselves and are always seem uptight. Even though I'm not much of an imageboard user/otaku (GAHSP), I've really come to enjoy the community. Love y'all! dance

What made you take notice of it? What itch does it scratch that no other mediaform can reach? What is one thing you like about that non-anime fans or casuals don't seem to understand.

Here it is for me:
1. I took notice of it because it was overflowing with style. Not only did the animation look slick and cool, it moved wonderfully as well. I remember going through this very wonderful phase where I would smoke pot and watch loads of AMVs. I would be so wasted sometimes that the anime scenes would take on this very solid looking, 2.5-D look which mesmerized me.

2. The scratch it itches is my boner.(´人`). There's such a rampant sexuality in anime, which has not been seen in Western Media since the exploitation movie boom of the '70s and '80s. I don't think anything else but anime is so gratuitously lurid.

3.The History. One thing I love about anime, at least as we know it today, is that it was in large part an outgrowth of Japanese nerd culture. I love all the references you can see, which interconnect anime, manga, movies, sci-fi novels, table-top games, video games---
In a way animanga is the perfect mirror version of the Western comic/cartoon industry. But while comics languished, oscillating between irrelevant stagnation and desperate attempts to appeal to normalfags ("comics aren't for kids anymore! Cartoons aren't for kids anymore"), anime seemed to chug along, powered by obsessive, self-indulgent nerds, and then rose to prominence whilst sacrificing much less of its strangeness and edge.

>>
What appeals to me is always changing, I think.. At first I was simply amazed with how stylish and lulzy it could be. It was nice talking to my friends about it.

Over time, I started to appreciate the references and and the pure, unashamed indulgence - not just boner-inducing sex scenes but conceptually, the way that passion can flourish in anime, even if it's 100% RETARDED there are so many anime that take their premise to the fullest. It's really fun to see.

Exploring how each show and the medium as a whole influenced or was influenced by a cultural movement, a particular fad, a musical scene, a time period, or just other anime is also super interesting. Anime seems really bizarre when you first encounter it but after picking it apart, it's an extremely dense type of art. There is a lot going on behind the scenes, and outside the scope of just animation, and all of it is really cool. It's just endlessly interesting! I love it!!
>>
>>4932

I feel like 2000s anime is quite popular with riajuu? Bleach, Naruto, Death Note, Samurai Champloo, et al. It's 90s anime that people don't care about. Even self-proclaimed hardcore otaku often profess to have only seen Evangelion, Berserk and Cowboy Bebop, and then they're left scratching their heads and mumbling "Well, I saw Pokémon as a kid, I guess..." as they try to think of anything else from the 90s that they've seen.

Isn't it weird how no one in the West™ gives a fuck about Hajime no Ippo?
>>
>Hajime no Ippo
It's a masterpiece and love it, however the anime is from 2000

80s is the unknow and start phase, the 90s has best animation ever, 2000 has the most creativity. 2010 is "stable phase" and 2020 is mainstream in a nutshell.
>>
>>4963
Not for the last 100 years or so nope.

>>4967
I got bored of Hajime no Ippo. It feels pretty repetitive and slow. I grew up with Ranma 1/2 and watched stuff like Saint Seiya etc. Evengelion is also overrated. Lot's of great anime people forget, thanks to anime becoming this normie thing now.
>>
I'm chasing the depressing emotions I used to get from seeing violence everywhere in it, but as I grew up I've started to take things less at face value and think about what I'm consuming more, and while you could say its because I grew accustomed to violence, I don't think its the sole reason for not feeling that way now.

As you read in the newspost, we're looking for volunteer users to help us with moderation and cleaning up spam. If you are interested for the position please briefly write about your relation with Heyuri, longposts are welcome but not really a requirement - few sentences would work fine if you believe so. Note that we will also look for your other posts on the boards while electing.

There are no requirements, but you'd need to somehow provide me a private contact. In the worse situation, Off-Topic's trip-based mail would work too, so don't worry if you don't want to have any presence on Dicksword/IRC/XMPP/whatever wink

Some people are very concerned with being 'subversive' these days, but unfortunately they are all trying to be 'subversive' in the same way, so it all comes of as rather samey and predictable. What do you consider to be truly 'subversive'? Do you ever run into examples of it in the wild?

I just started. All I know is E Chord and A chord. How do people actually make their fingers fit in between the frets?(;゚Д゚)
>>
best way to learn is in-person lessons. it worked for me ヽ(´ー`)ノ
>>
>How do people actually make their fingers fit in between the frets?(;゚Д゚)
You need to fully hook your fretting hand underneath and around to the fretboard side of the neck, with your thumb still on the rear side, and have your fingers in a claw-like posture (fingertips should be "pointing" towards the fretboard, not upwards to the ceiling)

This allows you to press the strings with the very ends of your fingertips, which makes it easier to avoid touching the wrong strings. Fingernails on your fretting hand need to be trimmed right down if they're not already, since they will obstruct you from using the ends of your fingertips

Some basic chords that work together: G, C, D, Em, Am, Bm
Then try adding these to spice it up: D7, E, A, B
Then these: G7, C7, E7, A7, B7

Congratz, now u can play most songs evar ヽ(´ー`)ノ

Also look into barre chords, they can make life easier
>>
having a sensei is great, but make sure it's an actually good one, otherwise you're better off self-learning. speaking of self-learning, im pretty sure there a bunch of decent online courses like justinguitar. but still, a sensei can give you real-time feedback and stop you from developing bad habits.

also do bother learning the theory. u know how to play a major chord but why it's major and how it's made? knowing these kind of things won't directly improve your skillz but it makes you understand how the instrument and how music works, and that will in turn improve your playing because you now know what you're actually doing while playing.

start from the chromatic scale, then simple harmony (3rds and 5ths) and the major mode, and then triads. after that you can keep studying harmony (the 7th and the other intervals) and then you can learn quadriads. this is more or less all i learnt in my first year of taking lessons from my cool teacher.

everything you learn in theory has it's use during playing. in fact, you're gonna learn very basic stuff and then practice a lot those things. you learned simple harmony? time to practice triads and scales until you can't take it anymore. practice, practice, practice... that's what learning an instrument is all about.

to sum it up, practice a lot and find a sensei. if it's a cool guy it will help a lot.

Doesn't it largely depend on what you want to learn? In some fields like law, you are expected to "just take information in"
>>
>>5510
Perhaps I misunderstand, but don't they have something like debates from time to time?
>>
>>5511
I dunno, but law is objective and one in the field is just expected to "know" everything.. Is what I hear from those in the field

In the other hand, for example in mathematics, the distinction between learning and taking information in is clear. You can memorize formulas, but can also learn the reasoning behind them if you want to... But most of the time you don't need to, there are just too much to learn (;^Д^)
>>
I've been reading "how to read a book" by Mortimer J Adler and he says that to learn something is to "elevate yourself from a state of understanding less to a state of understanding more with the help of someone who knows more than you about a certain topic" while being informed about something is just memorizing facts. To know about a topic means to understand why that is so, how it came to be like this and how it relates to other topics.
