Since we had one for 4chan let's do a reddit edition.

Good: r/piracy - speaks for itself. No lolis sadly.

Bad: r/unpopularopinion - despite its name, nobody ever voices a genuinely unpopular opinion here. Like the rest of reddit, 90% of the posts are recycled garbage.

I've been reading a lot of materialist philosophy, and the major thrust (assuming my retard brain hasn't mixed it all up), is that economic conditions are the most major cause of social change. Basically, culture is a dynamic device to cope with changing economic conditions.

One example is given of how dominance hierarchies formed as a response to the rise of agriculture. The materialist view posits that hunter-gatherer societies were more egalitarian because generally speaking everyone had the same chance at acquiring resources, but the rise of agriculture made it possible (sometimes simply due to the whims of nature), for one man to dominate another. That is, in hunter gatherer societies, anybody could go out foraging for food, without depending on anyone else, but in agricultural society, one man may have acquired less land than the other, or may have suffered particularly badly during a drought, which then allows the more successful farmer to buy his farm from him and use him as an employee, thus establishing a dominance hierarchy
>>
All human societies have dominance hierarchies. Most social animals do, too. Plains Indians of North America, such as the Comanche, had a chief and elder figures and they were your quintessential hunter-gatherer style society right up until the 19th century.

You might make the argument that agriculture exacerbates or expands them, since agriculture allows for more people and more people means a wider spanning hierarchy and a further strain on people's natural empathy limit, but the theory that you need agriculture for a social hierarchy to exist simply doesn't stand up to scrutiny.
>>
look up Sapolsky pacific culture among baboons - in a troupe of baboons where all the alpha males died from food poisoning after hogging all the poisoned food, the lower ranking males made sure than no new alphas could emerge and created a much less violent less hierarchical culture, and they made sure that immigrating baboons respected the new norms. https://www.zoology.ubc.ca/~bio336/Bio336/Readings/Sapolsky2004.pdf

I think this is a case where the material conditions (poisoned food), affected the hierarchical system.
>>
My apologies. I think I blotted out the first half of your post when I read it the first time.
Yes, I would generally agree that material availability influences culture, to a point. I think it's wrong to say culture stems directly from material availability. I think culture is a bit like how you would think of a 'meta game' in a videogame. It's heavily influenced by the material world, such as raw damage numbers or map design in a videogame, but the meta game also influences itself/rival metas.
People get used to a certain area on the map being carefully watched -> People stop trying to push that area and push somewhere else -> people stop watching that area because it's a waste of time -> people notice no one is watching that area and occasionally make pushes there again and take the enemy by surprise, but probably not as often since it's still a known hazard space.

Explained more plainly, I think culture is a combination of a bunch of interoperating systems, and that ascribing too much to a single source of selection pressure is a mistake. It is heavily influenced by the economic and material realities of the world around it, but it is just as often influencing itself.
>>
I disagree. Psychology and culture are prior to material conditions. Since humans interpret and experience everything by mentally analyzing whatever representations of external reality are formed in their mind, any external material reality is a collective hallucination. You can observe that many pre-modern cultures, before the rise of mass telecommunications, had completely different ways of interpreting reality. We count in base 10, but in the Nom language they count in base 27! You can see for yourself that internet dwellers that use one website can appear fundamentally twisted and incomprehensible to others. A /pol/tard seems irrational to a Twitter user and vice versa, both wouldn't be able to comprehend the kinds of things we see on Heyuri's /b/ on a daily basis. Why are these websites so different? Because the initial user base, the foundation of the culture, possess a certain collective consciousness which they pass down to new users, creating a collective unconscious that reproduces itself by drawing people into it's culture via language, daily expressions, the use of repeated meme formations.

It was 6 in the afternoon when we realized we were in the middle of joshua tree national park, almost at the arizona border. Needless to say, we got lost. I knew it, I alway knew, but I didn't tell anyone. I wanted to spend a little more time cruising the desert. We saw a lot of interesting stuff, so it was totally worth it in my book.
We did arrive there pretty late, but I wasn't the one driving the car so whatever.
Then I lost my glasses at santa monica beach and the trip was over for me.

My impressions of los angeles were that, the whole fucking town smelt of piss, even beverly hills. There were quite a lot of freaks on the sidewalk but I was expecting worse. A few meme flags here and there, specially at amoeba records, the store was absolutely packed with gay stuff.
There were absolutely no bathrooms anywhere. If you were lucky, you could order a glass of water on a restaurant and then they'd give you the password code for opening the bathroom. What a fucking lack of humanity. Then I realized the reason for that stench covering the entire city.

You are cursed so that you can only use five websites of your choosing. No matter which machine you use, whether brand new, or a friend's, only these few sites will be open to you.

Which one would you choose?

For me it's:
1. Heyuri (For LOLz)
2.PDFDrive (So I can download books)
3.ReadComicOnline (So I can have access to loads of old comics to keep me busy)
4.MP3Juices (So I can get music.)

2. danbooru - for faps and acquiring cute images of girls. heyuri also works for this, but this is important enough for me to require it on its own
3. youtube - great not only for entertainment, but since i'm restricted to only 5 sites it also works well as a resource for anything i need to learn about, even if i hate videos as an informational format
4. my own website! in case i want to put anything on the internet with more permanence than heyuri. i dont really use one at the moment, but it would be useful in this scenario i think.
5. i can't really think of a fifth one off the top of my head and i'm getting tired, so i'll just say exhentai for more faps and cute girls and call it a day (^Д^)

I've been going on Heyuri for a while, and I feel like Heyuri has lost its feel-good, do-whatever, happy and carefree attitude. It has been replaced with:
1. A collective attitude of Unwarranted Self-Importance
2. a /jp/ style culture where the most minor infractions result in public bans, angry sageposts, and rants
3. Overmoderation, taking rule 8 far too seriously and punishing people for tiny oversteps (like public banning someone for using christ chan)
4. Random autosages (or even deletions) of threads that dont break the rules, usually of threads that arent about the same 2-3 brainmelting topics or a random porn dump (basically, you have to think and act the same as everyone else or your thread gets deleted, locked, or autosaged, leading to a very echo-chambery enviroment)
5. General hostility from mods who feel the need to "correct" users about the proper way to breathe to fit in with heyuris very stifled and forced culture

I dont like it. It wasnt like this before, but as time goes on, the userbase was replaced with new people who dont understand this site. Its turned into the exact same culture that most "splinter of 4chan" websites go, instead of the "going its own way" vision that lolico/kuz wrote about on the front page.

i am working with some "big" names. i guess this is a promote/giveaway for non heyuri. i originally reached out to the anon who ran bandcamp and ended printing out 50 CDs for the last heyuri along with 2 stickers each.

i don't believe bandcamp anon will give me accesses but i am in contact with magio from kinpatsu, who i believe can sell the CDs and ship them out for me. the person who runs 4chan s4s radio show said he can shout heyuri and the CDs out on his next stream next month.

i don't believe LRM shouting out heyuri will bring a bunch of rule breakers but instead can help grow originality and activity.

People usually demonize an older guy going after a younger girl, but there are still a number of people who are quite fine with older women taking younger boys, and still a lot of guys who consider it a notch on their belt, or are unbothered by it. This leads me to believe that our standards for what constitute rape are arbitrary, and if a concerted effort was put in, all forms of rape could be made totally legal and socially-acceptable.

I think this would be a good thing because then everybody would get to have sex, and also it would take away the stigma of being raped since it would just be like regular sex plus the rape statisctics would go down since nobody is raping anymore.

>>
Rape happens when someone is sexually attracted to someone else and doesn't care about their feelings, so to make people think rape is not morally wrong all you have to do is convince them that it's not morally wrong to not care about people's feelings, which is possible.

However, making rape legal is definitely impossible (unless it's a law that says the politically powerful can rape the politically powerless) since not only do you have to convince people that rape is not morally wrong, you have to convince them that being raped is good for them. Since sex is only pleasant if you do it with someone who is sexually atractive, and nobody finds everyone sexually attractive, it's impossible to convince them that being raped is good. Even if everyone was sexually attracted to everyone else, sex would only be a good experience if done in the right way (I wouldn't like having sex with a hot girl if the sex consisted of her inserting her fingers in my ass, for example).

>Rape happens when someone is sexually attracted to someone else and doesn't care about their feelings
Anon have you ever read those stories about male loser and yandare characters raping someone they have a massive crush on? It's possible to rape someone out of love, the blinding kind. There are a lot of people who rape someone out of desperation like prisoners or just as punishment like Hanzo or Rape Man. I'm pretty sure he wasn't attracted to anyone he raped.

Historically many societies thought it was perfectly fine to rape foreigners. So an Athenian would be put to death for raping an Athenian but if he want out of Athens and raped a rando Serb then there would be no issue with it. After 9/11, lots of detainees in American prison camps were raped or forced to rape each other. So there's an example of people tolerating rape. Society is fine with raping terrorists, prisoners, and little brown kids in foreign countries. But in a general sense of making rape legal in society like that one h anime is never going to happen.
>>
>>6313
I'd say the kind of people who rape their crushes either care more about their own feelings of love than their crush's feelings or are unaware that their crush is not enjoying it (I should have said rape happens when someone's feelings of sexual/romantic attraction are stronger than their care for the victim's feelings). I guess people who do rape as punishment and sadists do care about the victim's feelings, just in a negative way.
As for people who rape out of desperation, I do think they're at least a bit attracted to their victims, there's no way having sex with someone you're not attracted to feels better than masturbation, so I don't see why they would do it otherwise.

>Historically many societies thought it was perfectly fine to rape foreigners. Assuming we legalize rape how are you going to stop the pregnancies? Rate of unwanted pregnancy will sky rocket. Legalization has been discussed in Japan to fight the declining birth rate. Anyway, I guess there are ways you could mind hack a woman to allow you to rape her. The classic trick is to make her drug dependent, put scopolamine in her drink or emotionally blackmail her. Femdom, maledom and BDSM are all situations where somebody has been mentally manipulated into being a willing victim. So I guess hacking someone's mind to make them rapeable works.

Not sure why this /q/ thread was baleeted - in my opinion it shouldn't have been. Anyway, here's the reply I wanted to make to it:

Rule 7 is basically the "don't devolve into modern-day /pol/ or Twitter when it comes to controversial political/social topics" rule. Earlier this year, there was a big increase in the amount of times "tranny" was being thrown about and used to troll/bait (in both directions), so we decided to clamp down on it

It's not that it can't be mentioned entirely, nor that u can't post ur hawt meatspin pr0nz - it's just that any kind of post-2014 style arguments/debates/trolling/"pinkpilling"/needlessly-slipping-mentions-of-it-into-everything/etc. are B&, and less leniency will be shown compared to other political/social topics (where we let a lot of things slide until things go seriously awry)

Regarding what happened in 64704-san's screencap - User A said their favorite game was Fallout New Vegas, and User B replied by calling them a tranny. That's Rule 7, but also Rule 8 due to it apparently being a meme on certain fail websites

Also, friendly reminder to n00b mods: if the action to take isn't clear, or you have any doubts at all, it's best to leave it alone for somebody else to deal with. Definitely don't just listen to the first reply you get on /q/ about it and start baleeting things sweat2

The reason I went along with the database update was because it could solve the bug where post wouldn't go through if it had certain obscure unicode characters. The one who did teh update probably just wanted to create his R8 thread (>>64683) though...

I don't think emoji would ever actually get used on Heyuri enough that we would need to fiercely discuss about it. I suggest wait and seeing how/if they will get used on Heyuri first.

Baneposting was deemed to not break Rule 8 in the past on Heyuri

It's LOLworthy, could have been a thing at any point in interwebs history (it's along the lines of "THIS IS SPARTA"), is totally inoffensive (in a Heyuri sense), doesn't intentionally disrupt the board or aggravate users, isn't a retarded misuse of a function, and it never made its way into mainstream "meme culture" the way that most of the things that actually fall under Rule 8 did

Rule 8 doesn't mean "anything and everything from 4chan after 200X" - it's mainly just the "we're ruining the internet and your fun on purpose because fuck you" stuff, as well as typical low-quality, heavily-regurgitated, template garbage that spreads around Twitter/Reddit/iFunny/etc. (and the "ironic" posting of such material) sweat2

I am locking this thread.

Over the last 6 months, this thread has hosted many discussions about how rules should be interpreted and other meta stuff, but that's not how threads are meant to be used on Heyuri. We encourage creating new threads over minor stuff - all discussions about different matters in this thread could (and should) have been in separate threads. Rule 6 basically exists for this reason too.

Another important thing is kokonotsuba isn't meant to have big threads like this one. Looks like this thread has hit the "limit" and starting to cause certain technical issues when someone posts in it.
