The problem with translated puns is all I think of when I see them is "I wonder what the original joke was", so they never hit.

This was the main reason I had to drop the monogatari series. It's probably great in the original language

Honestly, the modern day anime fan deserves trollsubs and the other bullshit they had back in the day. :dark: I wasn't there at the time but I can only imagine the disappointment whenever you saw [gg] or Commie doing a show.

I don't think this is quite it. I started watching anime during the last fansubbing days and a lot of complete garbage had subs. It was the waiting aspect, mainly. People who watched seasonal anime didn't want to sit and wait while everyone else was in the weekly thread discussing. Then an overwhelming majority of the next generation started watching on that very same streaming service the subs were ripped from. There must simply be very few people for a fansubbing group to cater to currently.

Commie gets flak for "over-localizing" but that's just a stylistic complaint, they are still among the better ones.
Most old (2000s) fansubs were produced by people who barely understood Japanese, they'd just make up some fanfic based on the 30% of all words they got. If they knew English, you'd at least get a mostly coherent rewrite of the script, but rarely something that would pass as a "translation".

The name of the mermaid character from the original dovegirl post I made was Cylene. It was a bad pun on Siren since she was a mermaid. I also remember there was a magician who specialised in poisons named sabrina and another anon made a girl named anomolee I think I don't recall the name but it was something like that(who had space-time powers.) Probably a good idea you didn't go with the original holyfield idea that I had, that was stupid.

ahem, as the guy who liked the concept so much that I ended up drawing nearly all of the characters + a couple short comics I am fairly certain the names of the loli generals were as follows:

Charlotte: the strongest general and lolifield's right hand (wo)man, can turn into a bat or a swarm of bats, can't remember
Cyrene (cute!): the mermaid girl with a big tooth who can shoot water from her mouth at very high speeds, enough to level an entire city! and btw she is my favourite character. Maybe i misread her name this whole time
Sabrina: the magician girl whom is my second favourite character and I imagine her as an evil scatterbrained girl who likes (evil) fun
Anomalee: the anomalous and mysterious entity shaped like a loli who can make objects near her do impossible things
Godiva Johnson: musician loli, she hates her name
Erika Von Braun: loli general I invented, she's very weak and sleepy but if she falls asleep she becomes strong, I hate her god why did i give her such a stupid name

unfortunately my memory cannot help me any further, there are at least 2 more generals whose name i cannot recall:

- cow-onesie general of whom I can only remember the cow onesie (i even have a file called cow_onesie_general which i never drew because i forgot T_T)
- failed general who isn't even a loli (part of the reason she is a failed general???) but a 40-something year old woman who wishes to go back to being a loli, she's dressed like a madoka magica character and talks to a teddy bear

I truly enjoyed those threads and I am highly disappointed in heyuri for not giving the dove girl saga the appreciation it deserves! ヽ(`Д´)ノ
There were many different concepts for dovegirl's past and the story overall and I believe if a skilled mangaka were to draw and flesh out the story a bit more it could have HUGE success (I am dead serious)

I would write down my own version of the story but this post is already long enough

Last but not least I would like to thank OP for dreaming up such interesting characters and story ヽ(´ー`)ノ

I should've made holyfield into a loli one Eva fields. Could easily have given her a big forehead to emphasize the heatbutt affinity. Even have her and Sabrina be a completely separate group from Charlotte and Cylene(Maybe it was this pronunciation) Where Eva fields is trying to become THE STRONGEST!!! and has enlisted the aide of Sabrina a magician specialized in poisons + Drugs phantasms and using them to completely morph her into a meta human who also has numerous phantasms related to boxing. Examples like
Footwork > Ability to walk on air at fast speeds
Punching > Embedded with the power of vibrations to really cause serious damage
Endurance > Tireless and doesn't feel pain. Making her really difficult to dissuade
Ring IQ > Automatic ability that let's her decipher what type of Phantasm the opposing fighter has.
Counters > Stores up damage and then uses it as a burst to increase all of her abilities for a specific period of time.
Heatbutts > Powerful enough to shake da world!!!

She often get's into fights with dove girl because she believes that she's perfection incarnate and that she as the strongest has the right to rule over the entire planet as it's master. Eva and Sabrina would be more of a comradery rather than anything sexual. I don't know if that change hampers any of the comics you've made though.

>I don't know if that change hampers any of the comics you've made though
don't you worry about that, the comics I made are just one of my canons (yes, multiple) and they are bad anyway
After revisiting them yesterday i thought "holy shit where did I find the BALLS to post this crap online for all to see??"

We truly need to get the dovegirl saga another go

Has the world gone insane, or is it just what it feels like to get old?

Image boards, Reddit, and other mainstream social media have become full of puritanism to an extent that I find scary even. People are afraid of anime. WTF!
Or maybe it's just that the spaces I used to frequent have become overrun by normal people and the people that were there when it was niche have all moved elsewhere?

I went to Lemmy, but the first thread I stumbled into was all about taking extremely seriously some 4chan screencap because it was misogynistic and that meant the world was basically over.

When did people start taking things so seriously and where did I take a wrong turn?

>The change was obviosuly at least partially caused by the Gamergate
Gamergate was (in part) a reacton to a change, not the cause

It was a time when - for several years and in increasing quantities - games journalists, critics, judges, certain (mostly indie) outspoken game devs, etc. were adopting a more political/radfem stance that was heavily coloring their reviews, as well as acting inestuously (such as hiding the fact that certain "reviews" were paid promotions or they had conflicts of interests with the subject they were covering)

Meanwhile, the games industry (mainly publishers) were still taking review scores, metacritic scores, indie game competition results, etc. seriously, and were making content and business decisions based on these things

Gamergate was an attempt at saying to publishers and advertisers "these people don't represent those of us who actually buy and play games" - and in response, the journalist/critic/indie clique threw a shitfit and used every connection and dirty trick they had to make GG out as an evil misogynist hate group waging a war against female developers and critics. Unfortunately, they did a pretty good job of spreading that bullshit, and the rest is history

Regarding the actual changes to games:

The state of gaming circa the mid-2010s (and subsequently today) was the culmination of many changes and pushes that occurred during the previous decade(s) - not anything in particular that happened in the mid-2010s

Firstly, there was the big push for "casual gaming" that started around the early-to-mid 2000s. The core idea was that a wider demographic = moar moneez, so make games that appeal to "non-gamers". This lead to "casual games" becoming a thing - which itself isn't a problem - but it led to supposedly "hardcore" games being made easier and easier until they were practically holding your hand down a series of linear, cutscene & scripted-event-laden corridors. Press X to read the next paragraph

This also led to browser "games" (e.g. Farmville) and the big mobile gaming push circa the late 2000s and early 2010s. Since "casuals" had no real standards or strong opinions, mobile developers and publishers were able to pull off and normalize some highly scummy practices without opposition - and eventually these practices found their way into "traditional" video games

The casual push was alongside a simultaneous push from developers to make more "cinematic experiences" and to become more like Hollywood - in many cases by simply hiring the same Hollywood writers, directors, and actors. The "maek gaem liek movie" idea has been around forever (Japanese devs were experimenting with it even in the 80s, not to mention the FMV fad of the 90s), but it really stepped up a gear with GTA - namely, Vice City and San Andreas featuring the likes of Ray Liotta, Gary Busey, Burt Reynolds, Samuel L Jackson, James Woods, Ice-T, and more

Next there was the push for paid DLC and "microtransactions", infamously spearheaded by the likes of Bethesda (Oblivion horse armor), but can be traced back to EA's even earlier treatment of The Sims series with its many "expansions". They were guilty of both putting things in them that clearly could/should have been in the base games, and also releasing packs containing nothing but minor fluff while still charging "expansion" prices

MMORPGs in the 2000s (particularly WoW) popularized the idea of games as a subscription service - though again, there were dabblings with this going back to the 90s. Eventually MMOs would start adopting the "Free to Play" model, where some amount of the base game is "free" but a lot of extras, nice-to-haves, and customization options have to be paid for individually (or would oth

The thing about The Sims 4 is that the game is fun to play WITH, e.g. abusing the CAS to the extreme to make sim abominations, playing with mods that diametrically change the game, making pseudo movies starring your sims and uploading them to YT, etc. But The Sims 4 is NOT fun to play the "intended" way. Even with all the expansion packs, it's painfully boring and empty in comparison to the older titles. Also emotions, which EA made the main selling point in all the trailers and promotional materials, are a useless gimmick that gets annoying fast

I think it is the rise of the commercial internet. The big rise of the 2010s was made possible by massive investment from industries into making as much high engagement, high accessibility content as possible, and we gradually become subject to shareholder growth imperatives. With smartphones, new social media, and an endless stream of content people who would never have spent so much time online were lured onto the web, and our world was a tragic casualty of that influx. You can't have mass accessibility and creative use of technology, because creative technology is often broken for at least someone. You can't play flash games on a device as weak as a phone which at the time needed to pretend it was fast and powerful so people would spend more money on them than they used to. When all these people began making demands of the internet, our old users could do nothing other than shrink away and hide in places that the normies they once hid online from couldn't see. Cringe culture made it even worse. Why make anything when you're just going to have your efforts and joys insulted?

I have given up hope for the modern web. I truly believe we will eventually no longer be using HTTP or similar technologies without at least some form of additional network like TOR in 10 years time because there will be nothing left of interest that can survive the rise of commercially backed bots.
