It seems like they old internet stuff because it simply isnt new internet stuff, and they seem to always define the toxicity of new internet - not in terms of problems like censorship - but instead a lack of censorship.

Many in that subset seem to believe the internet is too wild, or too malicious, or too manipulated by "bots" or "AI" and they opine for a sort of insular realm that adheres to their world view.

Coupled with a very rose tinted perspective about how everyone online was civil - creates a very distorted perception of what alternative online communities should be.
Then when theyre confronted by something less savory, they cry and complain.
They whine about AI because of their AI hysteria, they bring their modern internet sensibilities and complain about lolis, they whine about even harmless usage of slurs - since when did "old internet" get re-framed to mean "sanitized internet" ? What gives them the impression that people were more confined in their speech in the past than now? :monapc:

Theres a great deal of toxic babble many places, some of it even intentionally disruptive, but these people rarely see the difference between that and someone who is expressing alternative views or goofing around.
Its true people spoke civilly in the past, the internet was also mostly split between europeans and east asians - but people still expressed controversial opinions and even things many modern internet users might find pretty disturbing today...

I've come to the conclusion that a great deal of this is "entryism" and people bringing modern sensibilities into spaces which dont mesh with it. To them their way of thinking is just "being a good person", and how do you deal with that? Is there any hope that moralists could get off their high-horse, join the party, and have a little bit or fun? Or at least leave us alone so we can enjoy the good life in peace :pata:.

filter by recently posted and you'll notice most of the people who claim they miss the old internet were born in the mid-2000s. they miss something they hardly ever knew so they imagine it to be more glorified than it actually was.

from what I can remember the old internet was more civil than now and there was more effort put into discussions (mainly thinking about forums). online games were full of pedophiles (this was a massive problem on the game I played, habbo hotel) and it's not any different than what's going on in games like roblox today

I feel like that would just naturally happen in a decentralised internet, since someone who hates fun could just go to the no fun allowed forum.

People sharing a site with people with different interests and tastes is what leads them to complaining about said interests. They wouldn't complain about loli so much if they barely ever saw it, it wouldn't be prominent enough for them to think about it for extended periods of time. And even when they did decide to complain, most of them would do it on the no fun allowed forum, so you likely wouldn't see their complaining.

Even this thread is a result of everyone sharing the same video hosting site. Since you and those people both use youtube, you were exposed to their complaining, causing you to complain.

I am sorry I could not make them more clear with captions. It is a cover of an Elliott Smith song from 2017 -- but he sings it a bit differently during different sets. So I changed the lyrics at parts to fit the one I liked, and not the one on the Either/Or rerelease.

I've been having a hard time and that cover fit the moment. Someone asked me to do "Elliot Smith - Abused". I am gradually forcing myself to get the energy to do that soon.

I know. My subonscious/innate instincts react to these images. Not me. I need to take it into account before I pass full control to them. I do not choose what spooks them. Especially that some fears are innate (like suffocation, darkness, hostile/creepy faces (some call it uncanny valley faces when they are almost but not truly human), human screams and especially screams of toddlers etc.).
There was a fine lecture on youtube about fears!

I am barely if at all present in my body in that state depending on if I black out. Consciously I do not fear death, but in that state it is different. I can only perform most basic actions but only personlessly. Only for objective goals and not from my volition. I cannot alter much what I call "psychedelic thoughts" and they determine mood, emotions, feelings, hallucinations including vision sound touch temperature smell time sense etc. At most I can reset psychedelic thoughts and amnesia helps it a lot.

What remains of me at that time is a soulless tool that takes input from senses (who are all confused, desynced, and fight with each other anyway), but is unable to comment on anything, and who is fine with it (fine is an overstatement, I cannot prefer and I am unable to complain or enjoy). No will, no identity, no attachment, no preference, no love and no hate, complete inability for anything of this sort. Meat sack full of sensory aparature with no human inside. Note that I enjoy ungodly amounts like 500ug. No idea how amounts lower than 450 work.

I agree that existence is an illusion, but I do not mind. By definition it is impossible to comprehend the true reality, only able to refine more and more accurate imaginary mental model of it but it will always remain a belief and an illusion, greater or lesser but a lie. No way to trust anything, I personally do not care and go with it. That is my lie of choice.

On some level these fears are innate in us all (collective unconscious), some more than others. The idea is that rather than pointlessly 'fighting' your demons, you face and accept them.

"No tree, it is said, can grow to heaven unless its roots reach down to hell." That sort of thing. I didn't even know this was a Jung quote. Philosophy is mostly a waste of time, but I find his ideas quite useful.
