teh word riceing has been used for linux all teh way back in 2000s, but original come from japanese motorcycles or, rather car cultures! but sure, around 2010 its gained more of its popularity as Customization for linux ;3
>>
>>188521
Damnit, this is so true. This is basically the ultimate reason why I don't use linux. It's silly, but it just bugs me. Every font looks off, no amount of tinkering makes them render right.
>>
>>188521
Which MS font are you using? Verdana is pissing me off
>>
>>188547
font rendering on Linux was kneecapped badly due to patent issues years ago

and while the patents aren't a problem anymore, no one has put the effort into making font rendering not suck

On 2012/12/20 (I think that was the date?) I was working part time at a REALLY sketchy bubble tea place. The three other employees were kids of the owners and haafus. The two girls were really cute. I worry about the state of the world but I've been focusing on improving my personal lot in life and have seen major rewards. Most people think of traumatic memory as a wound that forms the moment something terrible happens. New research suggests that's only half the story.

In a landmark series of studies, Oxford psychologist Dr. Emily Holmes and her colleagues discovered something counterintuitive: the brain has a roughly six-hour window after a traumatic event during which memories haven't yet fully "consolidated" — that is, been locked into long-term storage. During that window, the way those memories are encoded is still surprisingly malleable

Trauma flashbacks are sensory-perceptual, visuospatial mental images, and visuospatial cognitive tasks selectively compete for the same mental resources required to generate those images. Holmes's insight was that if you could occupy those resources with something engaging in the immediate aftermath of trauma, you might be able to interfere with how deeply distressing memories take hold.

To test this, Holmes recruited volunteers, showed them an unpleasant film of graphic scenes including surgery, fatal road accidents, and drowning, then had half of them play Tetris for ten minutes 30 minutes later, while the other half sat quietly. The results were striking. Over the following week, Tetris players experienced less than half as many flashbacks as those who never touched the game.

The findings didn't stay in the laboratory. Holmes and her Oxford colleague Dr. Lali Iyadurai took the model into a clinical environment to study patients who had been in traumatic motor-vehicle accidents - a population where roughly one in four people go on to develop PTSD. The hypothesis was that giving patients something engaging to do while waiting in the Emergency Department could reduce subsequent intrusive memories. The results held

Crucially, the reduction in flashbacks was achieved without affecting deliberate memory recall of the event - playing Tetris reduced unwanted, involuntary intrusive memories while leaving the person's conscious ability to remember what happened fully intact. This matters enormously, because one of the fears around early interventions is that they might interfere with accurate recall needed for legal proceedings, medical treatment, or simply for a person to process what happened to them.

The research suggests behavioral approaches administered shortly after a traumatic event - particularly engaging tasks with high visuospatial demands - can interfere with the consolidation of traumatic memories and potentially prevent the developmen

Surely there has to be a threshold at which no amount of distractions and mitigations work. The research team just doesn't use the right tools to properly traumatize their test subjects.
>>
>>15838
>There are people having flashbacks to rekt vids??
I don't see why someone who's not used to looking at gore videos wouldn't have unprompted visions of those videos for about a week or so.

>>15840
>The research team just doesn't use the right tools to properly traumatize their test subjects.
I think the objective of the study was to research ways to help people recover from traumatic events, not to produce LOLz
>>
>>15841
I was being half-serious. They already give very few fucks about maintaining sanity of their participants so might as well pull out all stops and make uncle Mengele proud.
>>
LOL do these "researchers" know anything about trauma at all? Did they grow up as a kid in the 90s? If you want to know trauma, all you had to do was watch Monday Night Raw or Nitro. They had episodes where they would make it look like someone was murdered, then they end the show as if they were saying "tune in next week, fucker!"

I was 7 years old when this aired. I was crying as a kid in 1996 thinking Stone Cold Steve Austin got murdered by Brian Pillman, then after worrying about it all fucking week he appeared the next week like nothing ever happened.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=zF6REpduCE0
I remember watching Nitro as a kid and the nwo stole Sting's bat and he was getting beaten at the end of the show and the announcers were shouting "is he dead? is he dead?" When he wasn't moving. They were trying everything to traumatize people for the ratings. Val Venis even had a storyline where the Japanese wrestlers were going to chop his cock off and then they ended the show LOL. They should have just subjected them to that torture, and then asked them if they wanted to watch more the next week.

Vichan was the most widely used software for western imageboards for at least around 8 years. It's predecessors are all dead.

Lynxchan, its main rival is also long dead. https://github.com/skyssolutions/lynxchan

https://gitgud.io/fatchan/jschan Jschan is unmaintained. It was popular during the explosion of tiny, short lived western boards during covid.

As far as I can find, the only western imageboard software that is actively maintained and open for public use is Kokonotsuba.

Will more people migrate to kokonotsuba now that Vichan is officially dead?

deleting a thread (slower since it rebuilds all static pages)
>>
>Have 2 repositories, stable and unstable. The unstable repo would be used the same way the current singular one is. Constantly updated without attention paid to changelogging or version compatibility.
We are currently in middle of some things in development so immediately creating a stable version doesn't make sense at the moment - but eventually, we can maybe distribute kokonotsuba in a zip file on github.io homepage.
Those who benefit from the repo being on github are those who are familiar with using git, who are already likely advanced enough to deal with a rolling release software.

>The stable repo could also consider removing some of Heyuri's cultural footprint on the software to make it more generalized for a wider audience. Many board admins could view the default inclusion of heyuri fortunes, emotes, etc as them using HEYURI's software rather than using kokonotsuba. This is disadvantageous
That's fair. Currently it's just a few things in static/ that has Heyuri print and could be changed. We mostly didn't have alternatives for certain stuff, but if Kokonotsuba itself had some personality (like a mascot or icon), it could have Kokonotsuba-default fullbanners. I think 300x100 banners already have a boring placeholder, we can just go with stuff like that too.

>I do not support removing credits to heyuri however
There already isn't a lot of credit to heyuri besides hijacks in source codes of js files
The credit goes to kokonotsuba's home page, and Heyuri is mentioned there.
>>
>I left out a handful of the features the anonymous mod mentioned because they aren't present on base vichan either.
Some n00bmins do still adopt base vichan, but I also commonly see:

- modified vichan forks (such as 8chan's infinity)
- jschan (8chan-like)
- Lynxchan and derivatives (8chan-like)
- TinyIB
- futaba/futallaby/wakaba/kareha on sites that last about 5 minutes

I think a feature comparison chart should include these as well
>>
>here's some performance graphs I took just now for kokonotsuba
It'd be interesting to see the same graphs for other imageboard software, just for comparison
>>
for context the performance graphs are taken from an instance running an old version of gurochan's db.

so any tests on other software will need to be on something similarly sized, my one is 344MB (231599 posts) but the size will vary depending on the software

i can tell everyone right now though that without taking graphs and stuff from vichan, gurochan when it was using vichan would freeze and throw server errors just trying to delete posts - clearing cp spam took like 5 minutes XD
