/g/ was MUCH worse
I maintain that back when I went on 4chan, I was able to regularly hold a discussion about games that wasn't just pure shitflinging. Yes, I ended up going on to /vr/ more as time went because it was less obnoxious (emphasis on was), but it wasn't a pipe dream.
It has been maybe 10 years since I've been able to do that on /g/. Everyone is ready to jump down your throat for using a solution they wouldn't use, or buying something they wouldn't consider.

It's about politics and cultural war. The site is flooded with people with strong political opinions who are always going to find something to make the discussion political and get mad about it.
