My understanding (and please correct me if I'm wrong ) but normally Tor is safe unless every node you connect to is compromised.

This is definitely a different incident. Nothing like that happened. The forum had experienced downtime for a few days weeks before the hack so it's assumed that it was compromised from the time it came back until it was taken down. I'm pretty sure just the entry and exit nodes have to be compromised which is why it's a good idea to exclude entry and exit nodes from all of the five eyes countries.
