As it's been a while since the last townhall, and now over a month since we rolled out the big Kokonotsuba overhaul, we'll hold another townhall. You may bring up topics you've long wanted to talk about but haven't been discussed on this board/we haven't arrived to a conclusion during the townhall. Software feature propositions are also welcomed

If this is your first time, read about the townhalls here: https://wiki.heyuri.net/index.php?title=Townhall

Date: 5 July Saturday, 19:00 UTC
Location: https://townhall.heyuri.lol/ (which room there is to be decided)

or, kaguya's failure to have radical, revolutionary, and important ideas (RRII)

Kaguya is widely praised for his adminship of Heyuri, and he certainly has made alot of improvements. But something important is missing that the previous administrator did not neglect: expansion. Kaguya has not purchased any sites, and has not, despite repeated ignored emails, founded "KagyNET" - a spiritual successor to the other K-Net which we will not mention.

Now I am being serious, as the constant acquisitions and other activities of the previous administration are what brought Heyuri fame and attention, take the Vidlii influx! Even today, Heyuris new users still come from sources originating from the Kolyma era (such as the spacehey loli invasion)

Heyuri is doing good in all aspects, except that the idea of its 2 founders (to grow, capture new audiences, and become ever larger) have been neglected! Kaguya, is the ultimate "quantity over quality". Look at old newsposts! In their words, I personally set "4chan 2004" as my goal in terms of activity on Heyuri.

and its not just a lack of acquisitions and outward growth, but his allegiance to the old style of imageboard thinking, his failure to think outside the box, and his failure to risk unpopularity with radical ideas. Think of all the failed and successful experiments of the Kolyma Era, that was indicitave of radical thinking that is absent in kaguya!

...

Now I know kaguya isn't exactly wealthy, but I know this is now the reason for his failure to have RRII, the problem is deeper than that, and I think his lack of RRII comes from some sort of pathological fear of failure.

I end this message with a request that these complaints be addressed, that kaguya take a more active, expansionist stance, and that new, young, and radical minds be introduced to the sites leadership.

Thank you for your time :smile:

>He rejected the doomsayers who viewed imageboards as a dying format that would never catch on with the young generation. He disregarded endless complaining about "n00bs like me" and sought to build from the ground up, a new generation of young imageboard users who would match and surpass the percieved golden era of imageboards back in the 2000s.

I wonder how it is even possible? I'm old enough to use Win 98 as my first OS. Over the years I've spend countless hours using Web 1.0, IRC, XMPP, etc. I remember the life without a smartphone or the mobile web. But even for me the concept and design of the sited looks dated.

Teenagers nowadays use Discord. Discord "servers" (as they call it) are basically modern-era imageboards. Some of them are really wild! Discord is trendy. It has everything a modern user expects: a native mobile app, a desktop app, a voice chat, "modern" design, etc.. The userbase is large, basically everyone's using it. And you don't have to wait for a reply, you can get an instant attention. It doesn't work well for long-term discussions - but most imageboards are about quick shitposting anyway. And attention span is ridiculously short nowadays.

I just can't understand how are you going to contend with such an established service? How a niche site with an outdated interface can gain any attention at all?

Mind you, I'm not a Discord user myself. I just get why it's so popular.

>I just can't understand how are you going to contend with such an established service?
At least initially, Heyuri didn't contend with dicksword but instead utilized it to our advantage

During teh lolico era, Heyuri had an active dicksword where staff and users would hang out and chat (I never joined it personally, but it was well known and linked here on the site) and it was also the primary place for staff communications. There was webhook set up so that there would be notifications on dicksword every time a new post was made to the website, which is how Heyuri managed to have near-immediate replies on par with sites 10x or 100x our size. Note that messages were also relayed between our IRC channel and teh dicksword, although that feature b0rked at some point

As you might expect, teh dicksword became a source of drama and internet slapfights so at some point in the post-lolico era it was relegated to being for notifications only. It recently got shut down bcuz it was registered under the same account as gurochan's - or something like that. Whether or not it should be brought back (for post notifications only) will likely be proposed at teh upcoming Townhall

>How a niche site with an outdated interface can gain any attention at all?
Many younger people are intrigued by what came before them; many older people have fond memories of what once was

discord has an expansive featureset that ends up making it much less like a traditional web chat service and much more capable of completely supplanting the site it gets attached to

The wiki article doesn't explain who this "anti-heyuri troll" is supposed to be nor what it is that he has done, and overall leaves things very vague. I personally never felt that they were pushing the boundaries by shilling their site in here.
I noticed that this is something that happens often on the site, some staff will accuse someone of trolling or ban-evading without giving any details, like an user will come on /q/ to argue about something he deemed unjust or just to offer criticism and some mod will show up and smugly say "well, you don't need to hear what he has to say, for this user is an infamous (to whom?) party-pooper (what does that mean?) and ban-evader, capisce?".
>>
the post-angeleno era section explains the removal of heyuri credits on the site enough i think... is character profiles for each heyuri spammer nessecary?
>>
>without giving any details
Because turning trolls into local celebrities and listing all the ways they've successfully shat on your favorite website and ruined your day does wonders for their ego, and provides all the motivation they need to keep doing what they've been doing

If you must know, it's referring to a user who previously went by "tachi" and "PC98" - AKA a guy who got very butthurt over certain staff decisions regarding our Hakoniwa Islands game early last year, and then spent the next year of his life repeatedly attacking and spamming Heyuri and Heyuri★CGI in various ways over and over (and convincing others to do the same) and generally being a conniving machiavellian cunt

Some of the attacks he's been involved with have caused significant data loss, or at the very least wasted countless hours of staff time and energy trying to clean things up or patch things that him and his mentally-deficient buttbuddy have exploited. For these reasons (and many more - too many to list) he's been considered permab& and ban-on-sight for a long time. Despite this, he still lurks and tries to throw the occasional wrench into Heyuri's works and piss in our cereal whenever the opportunity arises

He became one of the administrators of world2ch in June 2024, and we have reason to believe he's still involved with the running of the site today. He claims that he no longer is, but he's proven himself to be a compulsive liar at every available opportunity, so we're not inclined to start believing anything he says now

If you haven't heard of him or you haven't noticed him & his gay little group's attacks on the site (though I'm certain you have, if unknowingly), that means our efforts in minimizing their impact on the site thus far have been fairly successful
>>
I won't list every bad deed each troll has done or prepare proof of their guily by showing connections in some 4000x4000 image, it already takes too much energy from us to deal with them :dark:

But in short, the owner goes by "tachi". Prior to deciding perma banning them, they (while coordinating among themselves) stirred to much drama over petty stuff (first forming an anti-staff clique over a CGI game), afterwards they flooded all site (also causing Heyuri★CGI's yy-boards to shut down) relentlessly through months, spammed Rule 8 including s*yjaks on imageboards, harassed our users, used a vulnerability to wipe votes on the anime nominations page, formed other off-site groups like https://steamcommunity.com/groups/DETPIM etc.
Besides all other evidence and his behavior/way of talking etc, I directly confirmed that site using world2ch's domain is now managed by tachi with Angeleno-san

>I personally never felt that they were pushing the boundaries by shilling their site in here.
I don't think you have been F5ing the overboard as much as we do through the last months
This is despite I don't like the word "shilling" and in favor of people being able to link to their sites without a second thought :nyaoo-closedeyes:

>some mod will show up and smugly say "well, you don't need to hear what he has to say, for this user is an infamous (to whom?) party-pooper (what does that mean?) and ban-evader, capisce?"
how much energy it takes for us to explain teh story from our side aside, doing so will make it seem like we're having some kind of dorama when it's usually a just simple case of one guy facing the consequence of breaking the rules
>>
tachi here, you'll never catch me mUHAHUAHUAHAUHA
>>
>>68860
i know for a fact tachi did not do some of this, you simply are pinning things on him that probably happened at the same time.
he is a pirate, so has never had a steam account, let alone one against pedophiles as he never had problem with it, and he would probably kill himself before he posted a s*yj*k.
but he definitely was butthurt over hakoniwa, probably still is.

also wtf, how did you hyperlink "Heyuri★CGI". i want to know how to do that.

>>
There are other places to discuss politics, even other alt-chans.

im not against any political speech or even controversial stuff, but its nice to have an island away from all of that.

However, i do not endorse strict enforcement of "political neutrality" as other forums that do this, tend to enforce their personal view of what is neutral, which is usually political in some form.
This results in a style of soft censorship of dissenting beliefs.

it takes a high iq to understand that and i think kaguya is doing a good job.
>>
Kaguya has an immense IQ. Genuinely stunning, knows 5 languages, manages multiple imageboards, and the kolyma leadership thought he was so impressive they just gave him the keys to the empire...
>>
kaguya has the biggest iq, some say, the very best, you couldnt find someone with a bigger iq, i said "where did you find this guy?" - they said "i dont know they dont make them like that anymore" and we agree with that sentiment very strongly.

It makes me really annoyed to see all those Russian shitposters that do nothing but shitpost retarded shit from the 2ch.hk (which is basically a Russian state-owned 4chan). They also bring their vocabulary to the Heyuri, which is wrong and simply stupid (most people here won't understand Russian anyway).

Heyuri used to be an international web-space with unique culture, but now it flooded with Russian shitposts, and it looks more like a 2ch.hk branch lately :sweat3:

>Dvach isn't government owned, and wasn't sold to mail.ru
You're right, it wasn't sold - it was taken, just like VK was. Now both are controlled by a state affiliated company. The company is in tight cooperation with the government institutions like the Federal Security Service and Russian police. They use 2ch.hk to study and control public opinion.

That's the only reason why it exists while little-known safe-for-work boards like iichan.hk are blocked in Russia by Roskomnadzor. IIchan admins were trying hard to respect every absurd Russian law for the past 13 years, but it didn't help. They were trying hard to stay away from politics, pr0n, hentai (or even any light erotics), lolis, and just about everything "edgy". Pathetic.

So much irony in that you're trying to put me to shame on a board that is blocked in Russia, just like about 80% of the global web. Of course I'm proud to be a Russian, and I fully support Vladimir Putin. I'm very pleased to be isolated from the rest of the world. I also truly believe that no fun should be allowed during the S.V.O., so we'll annoy everyone with our propaganda as long as we can. Are you satisfied now, comrade? Now go fuck yourself, you fucking KGB scum.

Thread moved to Site Discussion

If u wanna have the styling of one theme but with a different font, u can do this:
:root {
  --font-family-main: "Times New Roman", serif;
  --font-size-main: 12pt;
}

Change the font-family to whatever u want - left is highest priority and to the right are fallbacks (will get used when a higher priority font either doesn't exist on ur system or doesn't contain a glyph that the fallback does). Separate each entry with a comma, and put quotes around font names that have spaces. U may also want to adjust --font-size-main depending on the font u choose

I also made sum presets u can use instead - these are used by the various different kokonotsuba styles, and have a bunch of fallbacks built in:
--font-family-serif (Times New Roman/serif family with MS PGothic-like fallbacks for Japanese)
--font-family-sans-serif (your system's default font/Arial/sans-serif family with Meiryo-like fallbacks for Japanese)
--font-family-msgothic (Ayashhi World-like - MS Gothic with various Japanese monospace fallbacks)
--font-family-mspgothic (2ch-like - MS PGothic with various Mona-compatible fallbacks)
--font-family-aa-2ch: (same as above but also contains a fallback hosted on Heyuri with a 12pt-only aliased MS PGothic-like font fallback - this one is only really intended for correctly displaying 2ch-style AA)

To use the presets, do this:
:root {
  --font-family-main: --font-family-serif;
  --font-size-main: 12pt;
}
>>
Correction for using presets - u need it inside var():
:root {
  --font-family-main: var(--font-family-serif);
  --font-size-main: 12pt;
}

why heyuri why? (´~`)

When overhauling teh HTML/CSS, I was primarily testing on PC, but also frequently testing on phone and tablet along the way (and occasionally other things liek terminal browsers, Raspberry Pi, and Windows XP too - I would have tested on TV as well if I had access to one that's less than 10 years old!). The same cannot be said for anyone who previously touched kokonotsuba - sans things that were changed at my suggestion :sweat2:

I'll be the first to admit it's not yet perfect (10"+ tablet in particular is still kinda awkward), but I strongly believe that a well-designed site should look good on any display without ghey compromises or an entirely different UI. A site that works poorly at various resolutions just has shitty HTML/CSS!

Making a site worse/unusable for mobile displays (either through neglect or active countermeasures) is just plain dumb - it doesn't keep out crappy users or bad actors, nor does it ever truly prevent mobile users from accessing the site (desktop view and user-agent spoofing exist). In the worst cases, it backfires entirely and prevents users with lo-res PC monitors from accessing the site (*cough* mootxico *cough)

All it really serves to do is limit the number of users frequenting a site, which is antithetical to Heyuri's various goals and purposes:
1. be the place to be
2. attract hawt girls
3. TOTAL INTERNET DOMINATION!!!1
>>
I hate teh new design. It looks like shit in internet explorer and trinity konqueror and when I click on an image it opens a new tab instead of making it bigger on the page which I find really annoying :angry:
>>
there is no "new design" besides Sakomoto being the default theme
Everything looks fine on IE (besides few minor CSS here and there, but it was a necessary change) and from my testing, the img.js was never properly supported on IE anyways.

Opening files in a new tab is how Futaba does it too anyways, and if you use those browsers you're probably capable of writing your own userscript/style if u really want to :nyaoo-closedeyes:
>>
I don't turn on javascript so everything looks about the same :nyaoo-closedeyes:
>>
As far as I recall, the vast majority of kokonotsuba's JS never worked in any version of IE to begin with - even pre-overhaul. That includes the ability to expand images when clicking thumbnails, which cannot reasonably be done with HTML/CSS alone (not to mention that the settings window to enable/disable the feature never worked in IE either...)

A large part of teh HTML overhaul was making koko HTML5-compliant rather than the mixture of various older standards and totally invalid crap it previously was - and without relying on extremely new features or breaking compatibility just for the sake of it. Styling done with HTML tags/deprecated attributes was largely replaced with IDs/classes + CSS, so if ur browser happens to not support certain CSS features, things will look less "styled" than they used to. The essential functionality for browsing and posting should still totally work however (or at least as well as it previously did)

Another aspect of teh overhaul was utilizing CSS variables, which we decided were worth adopting despite being a "newer" feature (and by that I mean it became widely available 10-ish years ago). For compatibility with older browsers (IE9+, Firefox 6+), a script called css-vars-ponyfill was added which converts CSS variables to "regular" CSS - sadly it does not work with alternative styles as far as I could tell

The oldest browser I routinely tested teh overhaul with was SeaMonkey 2.49.5 for Windows XP, released in 2019 - I believe it's roughly equivalent to Firefox 52.9.0 ESR from 2018. 99.9% of features and styling works as expected on it except for a couple of extremely minor things (from what I remember: the SVG window close/minimize button icons are a little visually b0rked but still functional, and the "gap" property for flexboxes is not supported so a couple of things appear to be unspaced). If you run Supermium on XP instead, it's flawless
