I don't think this is quite it. I started watching anime during the last fansubbing days and a lot of complete garbage had subs. It was the waiting aspect, mainly. People who watched seasonal anime didn't want to sit and wait while everyone else was in the weekly thread discussing. Then an overwhelming majority of the next generation started watching on that very same streaming service the subs were ripped from. There must simply be very few people for a fansubbing group to cater to currently.

Commie gets flak for "over-localizing" but that's just a stylistic complaint, they are still among the better ones.
Most old (2000s) fansubs were produced by people who barely understood Japanese, they'd just make up some fanfic based on the 30% of all words they got. If they knew English, you'd at least get a mostly coherent rewrite of the script, but rarely something that would pass as a "translation".

課長王子 (Kachou Ouji) a.k.a. Section Manager Ouji a.k.a. the legend of black heaven. ( ´ω`) (NO spoilers in my post)

This show combined two of my favorite things, ROCK and SPACE. It's a little old but quite charming. Funny, and a really epic OP. It's been stuck in my head for a while

Ouji, a aged and tired salaryman, lives his dull and boring life day to day, reminiscing about his past life as a rocker and band member. His life will take a sudden turn when he meets his new, strange coworker...

The show is epic and action filled, and has alot of cool sequences, yet not too serious, and also has a handful of cute characters for your pleasure ( ´ω`) Despite being rated R, it contains very little R18 scenes.

ME and 2k are the cutest, but 3.1 is probably my favorite after those two

admittedly, I've probably ended up spending more time with Windows 3.1 than ME or 2k (both replaced very quickly on my own systems by XP, while 3.1 has ended up being used more under emulation and I've probably had a 3.1-tan background on almost every install)
never been super big on XP-tan for some reason
95-tan is pretty good too, although I think I've seen less 95-tan pics than 3.1-tan ones
