So, has anyone seen this? Last episode aired yesterday.

For me, it's one of those few works which themes have penetrated my heart and message has infiltrated my mind. I think it's really sublime. Every episode has brought me to tears, I'll always carry this anime in my heart.

It's a short story, only 6 episodes long, about life's hardships and the power of empathy. It follows the alien Takopii, who has just landed on Earth, and its mission to spread happiness in the universe. He meets Shizuka, a sad little girl who is bullied at school. Takopii will try to make Shizuka smile, but he still has a lot to learn about humans.

The anime dives into the minds of 3 children who suffer from abuse/trauma and explores themes such as generational trauma, bullism and the effects that a negative environment has on a child's mind, the power of talking, understanding the other and lastly, resilience.

Not only it is a great story, but it's also a beautiful anime. Directing, illustrations, animation, soundtrack and voice acting are all top notch, it's a truly highest-quality adaptation. Speaking of voice acting, Shizuka's VA deserves a standing ovation, never before has a Japanese VA in anime managed to send shivers down my spine like she did.

In short, I think it's a masterpiece and you should watch it.

Great Recommendation, Anon~pi!

I just read the manga rather than watch the anime but I will try watching the anime next.
My thoughts in spoilers It's a sweeter story then I was expecting. I absolutely thought the happy space alien would simply fail over and over again and it would be some grim dark comedy. However as I read it seems the story did have a positive message to say after all. And it's a really good one. The three children's lives were never going to be solved with happy gadgets and nick-nacks but rather the most powerful gadget of all which is talking~pi! Talking allows two individuals to connect with each other and start to empathize. Which was never going to happen with the way the two girls interacted with each other.
It wasn't the space alien so much that solved their issue but it was both girls realizing that they needed someone (not a dog) to support them and surprisingly it was their enemy the whole time~pi!

That's what I meant when I said that it's about the power of empathy! Takopii never actually empathized with any of the kids until the last episode. He saw the world in black and white (Shizuka is bad, Marina is bad), and only thought about helping, without actually understanding the problems that Shizuka, Marina or Azuma were facing. Takopii represents innocence and naivety. At the start, he's as naive as Marina and Shizuka. But unlike them, he gets the chance to see other point of views, and he begins to truly understand their struggles.

Shizuka's monologue in the last episode is simply great. For the first time, she opens up and lets out her emotions, getting out of the fortress she built around her heart and making herself vulnerable. Takopii listens to her, understands her, and despite not having a magic gadget to fix everything (no such things exist! After all, magic isn't real) and not knowing what to do to help her, he's willing to be there for Shizuka and support her. By spending time with her, he realizes that talking and connecting with someone is the real magic. Azuma had the luck of having a good and kind brother, but Shizuka and Marina were truly alone with their horrible familiar problems. Takopii's simple act of empathy of being there for someone echoed through Marina's and Shizuka's minds, who also begin to see each other's point of view. At the end, they're walking together. Not necessarily because they became friends, but because they understand each other, because they empathize with each other and are willing to support each other.

Even if their situations are still horrible, at least they're not completely alone anymore, and that makes everything a lot easier

This is no doubt one of my favorite anime of all time.

No way! Shizuka is cuter
>>
I haven't cried this much in a while T-T
>>
it was okay. one dimensional adults being complete fuck ups take away from the takopi's realization of human's dual sided nature. fixing time device out of nowhere was weak as fuck. schizophrenia allowing the girls to not fight was also anticlimactic. really enjoyed the visuals.

I deeply miss the crafty and niche aspect of otaku culture, subcultures that arent mainstream, maybe offensive, and a focus around the creative aspects of otaku culture as well. It was truly a spirit that came from the heart and wasnt afraid about being socially acceptable. (´ー` )

Nowadays its all sanitized, and consumer oriented, rarely do i hear about people making things.
In the early days of otaku culture people made a lot of things themselves, because merch simply wasnt available - figures for example, dojin games, etc.

How on earth do you facilitate the desire for people to create that kind of environment, i think the demand is there but not enough people know what to DO, how to MAKE things, how to form communities centered around niche subjects, how do we fix that?

I finished Akanes route. I went into this game with zero knowledge about story etc - so i had zero exception besides knowing its "KEY" - which I love for their nakige. ONE is also nakige and plays as a typical "KEY" game. Both story wise and narrative. I really did enjoy her route and she's was very cute. However, it didn't hit as hard as other KEY games did when it comes to feelings, which is also expected in how long Clannad or Little Buster are. That said, I had alot of fun! Great game!

Still have 5 routes to go! :nyaoo2:

i have a list of anime that i plan to watch or have already watched, from the 90s to 2010s that are popular with otaku. there are a few i didn't include because i either watched and didn't like it, or don't think it'd be something i'd like. am i missing anything? anyone have any suggestions? i am open to stuff from the 2020s, i'm just not sure what's popular or even coming out these days that isn't mainstream since i haven't really been involved in the otaku/anime community in a long time (at least the ones who talk about newer stuff that's more niche or too "anime" for the average watcher. most of my friends like and talk about the more mainstream stuff (some aren't as mainstream but still have the feel of being so), and not saying that as a bad thing because some of them are good, but that's how i find out about newer anime and no one i know talks about anything that might go under the radar for the average modern anime watcher. i have one friend who likes some more kind of niche newer anime, but not really anime nerd kind of niche). there are other anime that aren't on here that i do like, but i don't feel like they fit on the list so i didn't include them. i'm also open to manga and VN/game suggestions, but i'm not going to make a list for those since the post would be too long.

i totally forgot about ichigo marshmallow, i haven't seen it yet but it looks cute. yuru yuri i also forgot about. i had a friend who was really into it, though preferred the manga over the anime which i never really saw anyone talk about. i'll probably just watch the anime, at least at first. the manga seemed worth giving a try from what my friend described.

It's a tragedy they never made more than one season of Girls Last Tour...it's such a cozy, nice series.

Does the manga have a longer story? I would love to read it if so, but if it's basically the same as the anime then it might not be worth the time.

First I've heard of it! I'll check it out though, it sounds nice. I'll give the Girls Last Tour manga a read as well then. This will probably make me want to buy another tablet though. When tablets first became powerful and cheap I got one just so I could read manga in comfy spaces.

Admittedly I've been mostly ignoring anime and manga since 2012 or so, when my interests just shifted. For a while after 2010-2012 I'd always check Anichart each season hoping to find something that seemed good but nothing ever stood out. Alas I have evidently missed so many good things, but it's kinda cool and fun because it's like I'm rediscovering what it's like to be an otaku all over again. Finding all these series, manga, VNs, games etc that I have never heard about...

Thanks! ヽ(´∇`)ノ

I’ve just started watching Girl’s Last Tour after seeing it advertised in the back of the Madoka Magica manga, the girls r super cute ( ´ω`).

Yes, the manga does continue after the anime stops. The series is finished, and it's likely that there will never be a second season of the anime, so you should definitely read the manga to the end.
