So you may know that I have been working on this project to attempt to recreate the VOCALOID2 synthesis engine. Well I have a major update.

So yesterday I was talking about the SPP variant. As I said, I already had an SPP implementation. But it only implemented the basic approach, and only had a few configurable options. Also, I never actually tested it.

So last night I had big trouble sleeping, so I only got about 3.5 hours of sleep. Nonetheless, for most of the day, I have been working on implementing every conceivable SPP variation. Actually, I basically wrote if from scratch. So in total I've written about 1,000 lines of codes. Actually, this new version only has pitch transposition, and no longer implements time scaling, timbre scaling and equalization. While this sounds like a bad thing, it's actually good. I want to isolate the basic algorithm first and make that as close as possible to VOCALOID2. The interaction with those other transforms adds additional uncertainty and complexity, so I have skipped on them for now.

The code still some stuff to be done, and certainly could use refactoring (although arguably I should wait until after I am sure exactly what is used before doing so, so I can collapse the code first). It's basically this insane hellscape of preprocessor directives that let me control every variation of the algorithm I could think of.

Anyway, after fixing a few compile errors and outright crashes/NaN explosions, it actually worked first try. I loaded a database sample from the VOCALOID2 database and fed it in, and the whole pipeline actually worked first try. The sample used was a stationary, but for actual comparison, I will probably use an articulation instead. This is because some patents suggest a special type of whole-sample spectral concatenation interpolation that applies to stationarys.

The difference is subtle, but I feel like the frequency-warping has a slightly more "VOCALOID" timbre to it. Actually both do to me, but that one especially so. Let me know what you think!
This makes me feel like I'm onto something, although I have not done objective tests yet, although I hope to do those soon.

About the previously discussed idea from the figure image about the non-linear amplitude scaling - I have yet to implement and test that. I am starting to have some doubts about it though, for example because around the true discontinuity, the different sides appear in opposite order after equalization, which would not happen according to my explanation. Furthermore, after very close inspection of many figures, I believe that the curves are most likely hand-drawn now, or at least hand-edited, whereas before I thought they had been imported.

What's it with young people these days being overly excited over the idea of using ever unfinished window manager or building their Linux desktop from similarly ever unfinished separate small components. This type of software is either non-configurable, configurable through text config files, or require recompilation with coding skills. I know i3 and awesomewm are around since 2010 or even earlier, and here we go again. I hate this! Stop it, says me! Use X11, use a proper, mature DE now, it's Xfce, KDE, or Gnome2 and help make it perfect.

Does anyone know what causes this and how to fix? I can't seem to find info on what causes this, other than I think it has something to do with webp(?).

As you may know, I am working on a project relating to voice signal processing. There several goals to this project. One is creating a general voice signal processing software library; another is creating a realistic singing voice synthesizer based on said library. However, a side project of this project has been recreating the VOCALOID2 synthesis engine.

Previously, I have discussed this, but I had yet to really attempt it specifically. Recently though, I made a breakthrough that has been an impetus towards actually doing it. This breakthrough was not a scientific breakthrough, but simply something I found about. Previously, I did not attempt this because I realized I'd actually need to obtain the VOCALOID2 software to have a good chance at doing this. Previously, I had hoped that I'd be able to find clean raw audio of VOCALOID2 output online and compare it to my results. However, I quickly realized this was not enough. First, I couldn't actually find that much. Although the little I did find was quite helpful (it was the basis of my last post on pitch and dynamics models), I quickly realized I'd need a lot more, and would need agency to test specific things. Furthermore, I'd need the specific database to test.

The VOCALOID2 software has not been available for sale for over a decade. One option would be to order a physical copy, but these are hard to come by. Besides, it requires internet activation to install, which cannot work now since the activation servers have been shut down. Although some voice libraries are still available, these require the software itself as a prerequisite.

However, I found out after some research that apparently demo versions of voice libraries actually come bundled with a limited version of the actual software. It seemed unlikely though that any of these would still be available. However, after a quick search I found one that was surprisingly still available. After signing up, I was able to download it.

Indeed, it did not require online activation. However, the installer would fail to start, without giving any error message. I tried just about every trick in the book, however none worked. I even tried https://github.com/lifenjoiner/ISx as an attempt to directly extract files to install manually, but that also wouldn't work. Finally, I moved the installer out of the directory it came in, which contained invalid characters. I thought I had already tried this, but it seems I hadn't, because it worked perfectly following this.

So recently, I have been working on the VOCALOID2 recreation. The basic idea was to implement it based on papers and patents, implementing several possible variations in cases of uncertainty. The VOCALOID2 software would be used as a reference to compare the outputs to, and also to decide the few things that weren't really mentioned in papers or patents. The latter was basically just the pitch and dynamics model, which is the single most transparent thing since it can be analyzed just by analyzing the resulting synthesis audio.

Already, a database parser has been implemented in C, that parses the VOCALOID2 database format. That format seems to be known as DaisyDB, according to figures in Bonada's PhD thesis, so I have named it accordingly. Although I expected the process to be a huge hassle, it actually turned out to be surprisingly easy. Basically, just by spending a couple days in a hex editor, and cross referencing it with papers and patents, I was able to decipher pretty much the entire format. The parser can already parse whole databases without issue, and there are only a handful of fields whose use is not yet known, many of which I expect will be resolved in due time.

Anyway, the main focus of this post is something I just realized something about the frequency-warping rendering variant of the Spectral Peak Processing algorithm (alternative strategy 4/e, p. 89 of "Voice Processing and Synthesis by Performance Sampling and Spectral Models, https://www.tdx.cat/bitstream/handle/10803/7555/tjbs.pdf). This is of significance because I suspect that variant may have been used in VOCALOID2. This is for several reasons. First, it is the only one of those alternative rendering strategies that was patented ("Pitch converter", Bonada et al, JP4840141B2; now-expired)*, and said patent was filed in 2004. The latter detail is important, because I have already deduced that the VOCALOID2 engine must have been completed from between late 2004 and early. This can be seen from two angles.

*A later patent ("Singing composition device and singing composition program"; Bonada, Loscos, and Kenmochi et al; JP4839891B2; now-expired) proposes another technique distinct from all those mentioned in thesis; however it was filed in 2006.

On one hand, as I discovered yesterday, VOCALOID2 actually uses the Maximally Flat Phase Alignment algorithm. This seen based on the fact that what I have deduced to be an MFPA harmonic envelope is contained within the SPP frame analysis data within the VOCALOID2 DaisyDB database format. Each SPP frame has chunk identifier "FRM2", presumably meaning "Frame version 2". In Bonada's 1997 Master's thesis ("Desenvolupament D’un Entorn Gràfic per a L’anàlisi, Transformació I Síntesi De Sons Mitjançant Models Espectrals"), a chunk-based hierarchical format is described. In that format, chunks were also assigned four-byte identifiers, and the identifier for the frame chunk was "FRM1". So the "FRM1" vs. "FRM2" distinction could refer to the iteration of the spectral processing technique; the distinction of SMSTools vs. SMSTools2, or perhaps just different iterations of the storage format.

I was able to determine that it was an MFPA envelope because it was exactly equiv to a linear phase shift applied to the harmonic phases, plus phase unwrapping. Furthermore, it could not have just been the method wherein the harmonic phases are shifted such that the fundamental phase is zero (such as in "Spectral Approach to the Modeling of the Singing Voice", 2001, Bonada et al.), because the fundamental phase was non-zero. The MFPA algorithm was first proposed in the paper "High Quality Voice Transformations Based on Modeling Radiated Voice Pulses in Frequency Domain" (alternatively titled "High Quality Voice Transformations Based on Modeling Radiated Voice Pulses in Spectral Domain"), published in October of 2004.

On the other hand, the patent for the first iteration of the Bonada 2005 expression system (JP2006330615A, now-expired) was filed on May 30, 2005. Since this was the main improvement for the third iteration of the VOCALOID, and, I discussed previously, VOCALOID2 did not use it; this means the VOCALOID2's engine must not have been finished any later than that date.

Another reason is that SPP alternative rendering strategy 4 is the only technique mentioned in other papers and patents, for example in "Improvements to a Sample-Concatenation Based Singing Voice Synthesizer". Finally, in Bonada's thesis he noted "Strategy 4 (E) sounds mostly good but smoothes the utterances a bit", which seems to be consistent with how people describe the specific VOCALOID2 resultant timbre quality. Furthermore, he goes on to say "Therefore, it seems that none of the different strategies proposed improve the overall quality of the basic technique. Only the second strategy (C) yields a comparable quality, being in some cases better, especially for breathy utterances.", which would seem to imply that either they either went back to just the basic SPP rendering strategy; or they switched to another one, perhaps alternative strategy 2 or the one described in JP4839891B2. This would also explain why they let the patent expire especially early.

Anyway, onto the main topic of this post, which is what I just noticed about the figure in Bonada's thesis (which was in turn copied from "Improvements to a Sample-Concatenation Based Singing Voice Synthesizer"), picrel. At the top, we see the original spectrum and its harmonic envelope. In the middle plot, we see an intermediate visualization of peaks after being moved, but before equalization. Notably, there now exists one discontinuity due to one peak being used twice. In the bottom plot, we see the rendered spectrum after equalization. Notably, there is still only one discontinuity in the spectrum. The proposed technique eliminates gaps in the spectrum, but not discontinuities, because the SPP algorithm, as described, regardless of the rendering variant, scales all the bins in each region, which would produce a discontinuity at the boundary between regions.

Honestly I don't even WANT to use any of these sites even if I could but from what I can tell Instagram and Facebook completely block sign ups for me, I don't know why, I'm assuming it's because I use a VPN but really it could be something else entirely. I can not imagine being as mad as to willingly use that god forsaken site. As for Bluesky, I'm not a mouth drooling cock sucking faggot so I won't be using that. I have experimented with it in the past and ban evasion is quite easy there, not sure what it is like today, so hypothetically this is an option if I ever start having urges to have sexual relations with men. In previous articles, I have discussed sources of error within the Wide-Band Harmonic Sinusoidal Modeling framework. Although I have not implemented most of the proposed improvements yet, I have derived closed-form solutions for several sources of error and have also provided theoretic justifications for the proposed solutions. Notably though, one source of error - named in the original paper - has still gone unaddressed.

This is the intrinsic error that results from the actual vocal tract filter varying continuously, whereas in the model we have assumed that it remains constant over given intervals. In the original WBHSM framework, these intervals were single pitch periods that were presumed to correspond to a sum of an infinite number of identical voice pulses. In my last proposed improvement on WBHSM, which I called Radiated Voice Pulse Modeling, I proposed solutions, in the form of corrective terms, to the errors that resulted from actual voice pulses not all being identical. However, each pulse was stilled modeled as having a constant vocal tract filter. Actually, theoretically it got worse since we were now considering the pulses whole radiated duration (up to a reasonable cut off point) as the pulse instead of a single period, although in practice the added error would not be significant because the proposed implementation only adds error terms that are in proportion to the differences between voice pulses.

This problem would seem unresolvable within WBHSM framework, since it is based on frequency-domain modeling, which is based on linear time-invariant filters with defined z-transfer function. Since the actual vocal tract filter varies continuously, it is not time-invariant and thus does not have a z-transfer function nor a frequency response. Thus my proposed solution involves hybridizing the WBHSM technique with another technique that can model time-variant filters, namely Linear Predictive Coding.

Linear Predictive Coding has a well-known deficiency, which is that it is an all-pole filter that does not model z-plane zeros. This would seem to negate much of the benefit of using it, but this is actually not true. Disregarding the non-linear aspect for a moment, if we think of the z-transfer function of an infinite impulse response filter, we can appreciate that it can be decomposed into two separate filters: An finite impulse response filter that models the zero, and an all-pole infinite response filter that models the poles. From this angle, inverse filtering just the poles would leave of us with the voice source convolved with an FIR filter that corresponds to the zeros. Since the number of taps in that filter is directly related to the number of zeros, its size can be presumed to be small and thus the convoluted pulses can also be reasonably presumed to not overlap. Furthermore, an all-pole filter has a practical benefit in the deconvolution process, which is that it is not susceptible to numerical stability issues, at least within floating-point arithmetic.

One important issue is where the vocal tract filter's estimation is to be sourced from. There are basically two options: Either within LPC or within WBHSM. In the latter case, there is a problem. The current vocal tract model I am using is called Excitation plus Resonance. This model models each resonance as a parallel component of the vocal tract filter. On the other hand, LPC presumes a cascade configuration. One may think to simply modify the EpR model to be cascade instead, but this is not as trivial as it may seem. The procedure I have used for resonance estimation, which I have called Formant Region Iterative Refinement (the first iteration of which was detailed here: https://queuesevenm.wordpress.com/2026/06/02/recreating-the-excitation-plus-resonance-model/), is fundamentally based around adjusting each resonance according to its local surroundings and that inter-resonance effects are minimal. A cascade configuration breaks the second requirement.

One option would be to somehow modify the LPC inverse filtering process to be amenable to a parameter configuration instead. However, I am not sure how to do this, or whether it is even possible (perhaps a good place to start would be to frame the problem as a matrix equation?).

On the other hand, another option would be to create a cascade filter from the estimated parallel filter. This could be done by first starting with just the first resonance. This is the same in both cases. Then we go on to add the second one. Before adding it, we calculate the current value in the cascade filter at the next resonance's center frequency, we then scale its amplitude by the reciprocal of this value. This new filter will not be exactly the same, but it should be reasonably close. Actually, it may be a better model of the vocal tract. Perhaps also the FRIR algorithm could be used to refine it, even in the cascade case, since it should have a very low error?

The final procedure then, would be to run one iteration of the WBHSM algorithm, to estimate the EpR parameters. Then, for each instant an EpR model has been estimated, only the poles are extracted and are then converted to a cascade filter. Next, the inverse filtering is performed. For each inverse filtering frame (which can be as small as a single frame), the closest vocal tract filter estimates are interpolated using, for example, linear or spline interpolation. Next, the z-transfer function denominator of the resultant filter is expanded using the standard procedure to obtain the LPC coefficient, which are finally used to do the inverse filtering itself. The final step is the second pass of WBHSM, over the inversecfiltered signal. Since it has been inverse filtered, there should be no interference between voice pulses. An additional potential benefit is the harmonic envelope no longer contains resonances, which may improve the estimation of the source curve and zeros, although the same effect could also be achieved in the traditional EpR estimation by using two passes. Finally, a combined EpR model is created from the resonance plus the source and residual model obtained in the last step.

This procedure makes one significant presumption, which is that most of the error of WBHSM is concentrated in the non-resonance part of the EpR model. This would seem to be a reasonable assumption to make, given that EpR is fitted using multiple harmonics, and that it could furthermore be filtered across multiple frame using techniques such as lowpass filtering, moving averages, or exponential moving averages. However, I do not yet have empirical evidence for this. One possible case wherein the presumption would not hold would be if the error changes slowly over frequency, for example. Actually, a type of error with precisely this fingerprint does exist; it results from the fundamental frequency changing.
