What's it with young people these days being overly excited over the idea of using ever unfinished window manager or building their Linux desktop from similarly ever unfinished separate small components. This type of software is either non-configurable, configurable through text config files, or require recompilation with coding skills. I know i3 and awesomewm are around since 2010 or even earlier, and here we go again. I hate this! Stop it, says me! Use X11, use a proper, mature DE now, it's Xfce, KDE, or Gnome2 and help make it perfect.
>>
I dunno, but let people do whatever they want on their computars ヽ(´ー`)ノ

I like my PC personal, even if it's dumb.

Nah. I even purged everything that has GTK3 and QT anything that I could. And will finish off the rest as soon as possible.
>>
those people (actually 99% of linux users) don't actually do anything on their computer so they spend their time ricing and arguing online.
also everyone knows mate is the best desktop :^)
>>
meh, I like my hyprland.
>>
personally i like configuring things through text files and source code but i'm not a young person and my first os was dos
>>
i hate winshit, it doesn't allow me to move my taskbar, like wtf, i like it on the side or ontop!

My otousan made his own desktop for his Amiga

Because it's fun, and it looks cool. It's all configurable through text, not unconfigurable, and most people that do Unixporn stuff like this seriously are usually beginner programmers who got acclimated to doing everything in the terminal anyways, so they don't mind, Vim/Emacs etc.
The cool thing about open-source is that u do what u fucken want.

>Use X11, use a proper, mature DE now, it's Xfce, KDE, or Gnome2 and help make it perfect.

I will only use the steaming pile of broken dogshite that X11 is over my dead body.
I love my KDE Plasma 6.8.1 & GNOME 51 though, pretty amazing desktop environments that recently released, I've been able to get them running on ancient toasters with Debian, Arch & Fedora and they're so fast, they even support HDR video editing!

I do also get your point, one should contribute to free software projects, atleast talk about it if you can't donate or program.
Actually, ricing is a very good way to do that, once you show people how cool your desktop lookz when u customize it, they'll be more receptive to Linux/BSD/plan9 etc.

what other ways are there to configure stuff other than putting all the settings in a .config or something?
>>197773
you can actually move your taskbar, you first have to unlock it by rightclicking it and selecting unlock taskbar, then you'll be able to drag it to the edges of the screen

well, it all edits the .config, but OP meant something like a GUI

sure, but that doesn't change the fact that modern GNOME is stable & feature-ready, you can just admit that you personally don't like it.

Xlibre is AI coded nonsense by a faggot who can't manage middle school math (check his GitHub commit history), but even assuming it did work; it's still X11

I use a WM but I just set it and forget it. At some point, tinkering with it every day becomes worthless busywork. Action and optimization without direction.
It's also home decorating for people who will never buy houses.

LOL true

Fun is a valid form of direction.

I use dwm because it just works

all i use is a school calculator

xfce4, vanilla gnome = getting actual shit done

Shitting on X11 while saying that GNOME is good makes you look like a retarded hypocrite. The suckless.fyi screenshot and the xwindows quotes are just a cherry on top when GNOME is the antithesis of suckless. He's right, you're retarded and gay + a hypocrite.

Suckless isn't the be-all, it's not for everybody, the concept of a desktop environment is inherently non-suckless, you can like both philosophies.
However, for the explicit PURPOSE of a desktop environment, GNOME is one of the best things that Unix has ever had, actually the second best after KDE Plasma.
>>
>>198025
>GNOME is one of the best things that Unix has ever had
Maybe 30 years ago when GNOME wasn't the biggest radioactive piece of shit ever created.
>>
>>198076
It still is, by featureset and compositor performance, way ahead of 99% of desktop environments that exist.
Just because it has opinionated design choices doesn't get away from the fact that it's excellently written, high-quality code. And thats a great thing for free, libre software, because it's one of the only open-source graphical environments which can truly stand face to face with something proprietary like macOS's Aqua, which is currently light-years ahead of anything on Linux, but GNOME and KDE Plasma have catched up insanely fast in the past 3 years.

>it's one of the only open-source graphical environments which can truly stand face to face with something proprietary like macOS's Aqua
This is the problem. Aqua is filth.
