Such a strange feature to request Never seen something like this before.
Why is it too annoying to rename on your computer?

It moves the file in the folder, messes with file modification dates, may conflict with another file name, and requires me to fiddle in the file manager.

The solution is to not care about how ur filenames appear on Heyuri

Think about it this way: if this feature already existed and someone wanted to remove it, would you be for or against it?

I more than often name my own files so i can easier navigate them in my own local storage system. In case i wanna find it and re-use it. But reusing image is against the law!

Rather, it's because the couple of people behind Heyuri's operation are busy not stagnating on other things that I don't want to care or think about a mostly useless feature that only serves to inspire lame 2008+ 4/v/-like filename threads

I've been OK with the removal of certain other Heyuri features in the past too - for example, I was fine with the removal of quote backlinks, the thread list/table thing we had for a while was annoying, and I'm glad we no longer(?) have dice-rolling cuz roll threads suck

I'm even in favor of removing the current flag function outside of 日本語@Heyuri, cuz flags only inspire crappy 4/int/-like threads which we've seen an uptick in recently

I remember when "rename your files" was in the rules. Now everyone wants filenames to be unix timestamps. Times sure change.

If u remember that, u should also remember that it was in the "TOP TIPS FROM KUZ" that (at least originally) explicitly stated they were not rules nor guidelines, as well as that particular part being labelled teh st00pid and the virtues of UNIX timestamps being provided the moment kuz put it up

It think a feature like this is alright as long as it's optional.

What really troubles me is that little 'number of users' bar. I think it's lame to care so much about metrics. Maybe you could make that optional too? As in, it doesn't show by default for newfags, but once you get really into Heyuri and want to start tracking things, you can access it?

The live user counter is more for users to see that they're not browsing alone, to inspire moar posts. It's quite common on Japanese BBSes and imageboards, including Futaba, Momizou, most Ayashii World boards, etc.

That said, I think it's generally healthy to keep an eye on population size (which we've done since the early days, see: graph anon, news posts, etc.) - similar to how a person trying to lose/gain weight is wise to monitor their daily calorie intake. Or maybe teh sandwich is just making me think of food...

Prior to the more recent discussions about kuz's tips/netiqutte page during kaguya's reign (where it was basically n00bs doing it wrong and trying to protect what they thought was "Heyuri culture" VS me desperately trying to stop them), the brief discussions on them were in 2020 and 2021 when they were first added and ammended. These discussions were on the boards themselves, not in private or behind-the-scenes

Back then, hardly anyone commented on them other than myself (and none of us made any attempt to follow them, because why the hell would we?), and I was outspoken in saying "some of them are teh dumb, but as long as it's clearly stated they're not rules, it's whatever"

I'll post a copy I saved circa June 30, 2020 when they were first written - which includes the part about naming files - and hopefully you'll see why nobody took them seriously or paid any attention to them:

TOP TIPS FROM KUZ:

1. NAME YOUR FILES BEFORE UPLOADING.
2. CAPITALIZE YOUR ACRONYMS.
3. USE CAPS LOCK TO EXPRESS GREATER EMOTION IF NECESSARY.
4. dont use capslock
5. USE SHIFT INSTEAD
6. zOMG!!
7. USE THE *OLD INTERNET* THEME FOR BEST RESULTS
8. OLDER IS BETTER, OLD GIFS, OLD ANIME, OLD IMAGE MACROS, OLD EVERYTHING. USE THEM HERE!
9. DONT BE AFRAID TO CONVERSATE WITH PEOPLE.
10. PROTECT YOUR NAME, USE A TRIPCODE!
11. UNDERSTAND THAT THE BOARDS ARE NOT MEANT TO BE SUPERFAST, SO DONT BE ANNOYED WHEN THEY ARE SLOW.
12. MAKE OC
13. ???
14. PROFIT
15. WUT
16. START OVER

These arent rules, nor guidelines, just some helpful advice from yours truly.

Later on, the much-less-fun second half of the tips/netiquette page was added, and I was even more critical of those (and again, it was pretty much only me who said anything about them - everyone else took no notice and carried on not even attempting to follow them)

Just imagine if kaguya put up a page today saying "make sure to always use lowercase" and "always use mp4 instead of webm", and then 3 years later, newbies who weren't around when it was clearly added as a half-joke/half-irrational rant, started posting "use lowercase or gtfo" and "fuck off webm poster" without a hint of irony or sarcasm - cuz that's basically what happened with kuz's "tips"

ah yes, the holy mantra.

Heyuri likes to eat japanese filenames. If the filename is entirely in japanese it will be completely devoured and replaced with a timestamp. If the filename is partially japanese like this one I'm uploading now: "つくねちゃんとウエライド sm17023154 ノーベルト.mp4", the first part will be eaten and only "sm17023154 ノーベルト.mp4" will remain.

Also if the filename is completely devoured it will look like the post has no file on the overboard.

noting this down - on firefox, though some privacy guides will tell you to disable it, dom.event.clipboardevents on about:config needs to be set to true for this to work.
