We don't delete long informative/long posts just because there is one "unwelcome" word in them, that would be lame. Rule 8 punishes "ruining fun", not "having fun in the way we usually don't do" (that's not the best wording for it but u should get what I mean, there are stuff like posting s*yjaks in a non-R8 "intention" granting bans, but that's not teh topic now)
That said, I couldn't help but notice it too. It's understandable that it's simply the way some of our younger users have been naturally having fun speaking for years until coming to Heyuri but there is a reason why they are otherwise b& words.
In the past,
>>62872
was suggested. At the time I made the post
>>62874
in that thread - I don't think forcefully filtering the words to hide users' n00bness will educate them.
Instead, I consider working on a javascript that would listen the comment box, and throw out mere "warnings" about certain words, and give suggestions for alternatives & explain why we don't prefer to use them etc. That would give users liberty to use whatever word they want to (at their own risk) while educating them before they even make the post.
A warning message would appear like:
Seems you are going to use the word cringe, which may be a buzzword banned by Rule 8. Its usage of slang originates from (i dunno lol), and is usually associated with a certain subculture that's not aligned with Heyuri's culture.
Consider replacing it with something else, perhaps one of these words: "sux", "lame", "embarrassing", or just the proper adjective "cringeworthy" (suggestions welcome).
Ignore this warning if you are using it in the dictionary meaning of the verb for "to shrink back in fear or discomfort".
(ignore the specific explanation for "cringe" I came up quickly, also I'd make it so it links proper sources for claims & English dictionaries for definitions)
Should I werk on it? Or do you think it would be over-policing/annoying?

seems like an interesting idea, could be worth trialing. Though it could become annoying if it pops up every tiem an otherwise b& word/phrase is being used in certain contexts.

Maybe, but I don't think such words are used so often that would make the warning get annoying. It would be implemented in a way that it wouldn't be a trouble to just ignore anyways
I'm thinking it should appear under the post form, and a short message like "1 warning" would appear next to "Post" in case it would be out of screen

I think that would be annoying, and that a more humorous solution is preferable. I remember a long time ago 7chan wordfiltered "lol" to "shit in my mouth". It wasn't a fancy regex filter either so it backfired all the time, like turning "lolicon" into "shit in my mouthicon". 7chan had a delicious cake board at the time too so loli was frequently discussed. It was still more funny than annoying. The javascript warning sounds more like something a social media site does if your post contains something that might violate their ToS and make their advertisers angry.
Also, some words like "based" could be left unfiltered while other words that aren't as frequently used in non-newfaggian english like "seethe", "dilate" and "skibidi" could be filtered to things like "please rape my face".

I think teh JS pre-warning idea sux personally - it's taking teh interwebs way too seriously, and would do far more harm than good IMHO (both in annoyance and in making Heyuri a worthy subject of ridicule)
The original intention of the rule was to combat a certain breed of stock one-word retorts and putdowns, such as "cringe" -> "obsessed" -> "seethe" -> "dilate" etc. which was flooding every thread on 4chan (among other places) for several years. It's the intention and attitude behind those posts that are the problem, not the exact vocabulary (which is ever-changing as time goes on)
Teh rule is there to make sure Heyuri isn't a party-p00ping hostile-against-itself 24/7 kinda site - ironically, some of the more ardent Rule 8 supporters can end up bringing about that kind of culture anyway by having a stick up their butt about it

Mod-sama's right and any further obsessive compulsion towards policing trivial bullshit will further cement the idea that outsiders have that Heyuri is an oldfag LARP site, and if that were to be implemented I wouldn't even blame them for thinking that anymore. Treating slang from the past ten years like it's fucking Voldemort makes us no different than a Spacehey user that makes intentionally awful neocities webpages.
A report that implies the user that posted one of the most interesting threads this month should be banned because they said a word that reminded them of something from the past five years makes me feel like Rule 8 needs a very thorough reworking rather than adding some wordfilters. Is anyone up for a townhall? ┐(゚~゚)┌

too, but is encouraging certain vocabulary over others that bad of an idea? Linguistic protectionism is something actual countries do to "purify" their languages from foreign influence. As Heyuri, we will sooner or later establish our own country so laying the foundation of our language institute by now makes sense to me. What others think about it isn't our business

a word filter would genuinely just solve the problem in cases like this and is a time honored tradition that brings lolz
it is one of the specifically mentioned "do not use" words on rule 8, so it'd be great to wordfilter
my personal belief in r8 should always be intent too -- r8 always seemed like it was to kill off the completely thoughtless buzzword replies that killed 4chan, not to strictly enforce our own newspeak here ┐(゚~゚)┌

The thing is, cultures naturally change over time - even on the internet. Heyuri today isn't the same as what it was 4 years ago (or even 2 years ago), and I don't think it's wise to force it to be
Such heavy-handed tools to "educate" will only sabotage the community's own authentic efforts to establish and determine its own culture, and I suspect will also limit the number of new users willing to give the site a chance - I certainly wouldn't want to be lectured by freaking internet Clippy while writing my first post on a site I thought looked cool... it's a big turn-off!
It's one thing for users to state in their own words the various dos and don'ts of the community as we perceive them - or even to reference the rules when it's appropriate - but it's another for all the various minutia to be shoved down users' throats (along with a 5-step program on how to "correct" their behavior) the moment they attempt to write a post

Heyuri April Fool's 2025: Clipyuri, a JS site buddy that rewrites all of your posts to 'fit site culture' and shows up every 5 minutes to lecture you on Rule 8!
...which isn't very far off from what's being suggested as a permanent tool.

H.JVFON2 was me on another device
>The thing is, cultures naturally change over time
True, and if there isn't any supervision on what we want allowed and what not allowed, the big culture would just absorb everything. Unlike IRL, our new members weren't kids who were trained to be the copy of their parents and grew up in the same environment as everyone else. They are more like total foreigners who may have opposite values migrating in and bringing their culture with them. Now internet isn't such a serious business, so there are just two things to worry about - their attitude and vocabulary. We mostly have the same opinions about punishing bad attitude and it's been proved to be werking fine for years
>Such heavy-handed tools to "educate" will only sabotage the community's own authentic efforts to establish and determine its own culture
I don't think there has ever been a point where the community didn't make efforts to avoid using a broad "modern slang" since 2020. If anything, I quit being heavy handed about moderating specific vocabulary at some point. I think this (or any, specific details on its working can be changed) tool to give users mere warnings (NOT annoying pop-ups as someone thought above) for stuff they may not even be punished for ignoring fare very light compared to it. It should also be easy to make settings to disable it or make it so it's disabled by default and enable for certain users etc, but I think you're more uneasy about its existence now
>freaking internet Clippy
It could be so Rodoyan or Rebecca Miyamoto lectures instead!
>it's a big turn-off!
>along with a 5-step program on how to "correct" their behavior
Fair! This is the reason I ask for your opinions. I grew up with our teachers/TV etc dictating what words we should use over others (both to protect the original meanings/nuances of them and to purify the language from loanwords), and as the result it was a success and there are times I can't understand stuff written a few decades ago - I think it's a good policy and could just werk on internet (Heyuri) too. Its internet equivalent would be not understanding what young people on other sites* you try to avoid using is trying to tell
I won't name anything specific but suppose Heyuri suddenly got a
p
a
r
t
y
b
u
s
from one of the such sites. Would you really be fine with them bringing in their slang words/way of speaking in general and making their words the new norm on Heyuri, because they don't have a bad attitude? As a user, I'd try to subtly get them to use what we liked to use until they came over. I don't think being a faget like OP who would probably just ban them is a solution, but neither is not giving them any help to adjust. In this light, I think a tool that would help users in the most subtle way is a built-in mechanism for it where only the user would know about their "mistake". Again, it also doesn't need to be a 5-step program but a more simplistic message like "x is z, what you want to say may be y" or even "consider using x instead of y". To give example from one of ur complains from the past (that I now follow myself), it could say "Seasonal anime refers to anime airs in one season at any time. if your nuance is something airing in this season, you may want to write something like currently airing anime instead.". Who knows, maybe if we manage getting people to follow it, it could eventually lead to a wider adoption of the correct usage on internet
I want to hold a townhall soon, possibly in early September if I can arrange some things. Maybe I will roll a prototype for to give more users idea to have them form opinions a day or two before we hold it if I manage to.
*: I myself was warned by two users for using "platform" instead of "site" in the past, since then I avoid using that word but I'd have preferred there was a non-human system warning me instead of a user after I already made my post

I don't think those kinds of things should be stated and written in stone as if we're some kind of unquestionable authority on the matter (especially for things so minor), nor do I think it's going to be helpful or inspire anyone to actually follow what it says - in fact there will likely just be an increase in users intentionally going against the "advice" because it's being given to them in such an obnoxious way
I don't support any kind of "Official Heyuri Lexicon & Terminology: You Must Use It" project beyond what we already have in the rules - users will decide for themselves what they do or don't want to write, and JavaScript-enhanced word policing isn't going to help change their mind. At best, all you can do is offer your own thoughts/opinions/experiences, and - if a user is open to hearing you out and your points make sense - maybe they'll take it into consideration in future
This is exactly what I did back when digits-checking, greentext, "doremispeak", OP quotelinking, etc. were commonplace on Heyuri years ago - the topics got brought up by other users, I offered my thoughts and experiences in the threads, and then there was a near-absence of those things going forward - and I wasn't even a mod! I strongly believe that's the way to do it, if at all

>WTF is that?
A phenomenon deriving from [s4s] users involving retarded stuffed-nose babytalk, such as here:
https://archive.4plebs.org/s4s/thread/7730109/
It was very common around Heyuri's first year or so of existence - my theory was that our younger users were confusing it with l33tsp33k and old IM/textspeak

>I don't think those kinds of things should be stated and written in stone as if we're some kind of unquestionable authority on the matter
You are right, we aren't - but neither are the suggestions would be absolute rules. If I had a way to offer them as my "tips" without them being treated like the old "Tips" page once did, I'd just go with it
But really, all it would should do is offering another perspective. And if someone goes against them only because they are annoyed by some mascot character, they are likely not fitting the culture anyways. Reminds me there is just one user like that about OP quotelinking - doing it just to annoy others pointing out, and he is one of the worst ban evaders we've had...
>Official Heyuri Lexicon & Terminology: You Must Use It
Again, I explicitly said there wouldn't be any "You Must Use It"s, nor I support such a thing myself!
>At best, all you can do is offer your own thoughts/opinions/experiences
This would effectively be that - without me butting in every time to make a post to offer my opinions in unrelated threads. Consider only a minority of users browse this board to read our conversations.
>This is exactly what I did back when digits-checking, greentext, "doremispeak", OP quotelinking, etc. were commonplace on Heyuri years ago - the topics got brought up by other users, I offered my thoughts and experiences in the threads
Correct, but...
>and then there was a near-absence of those things going forward
...I caused this!
>and I wasn't even a mod
Because I was! And I was actively suppressing posts with them, or making public bans for them.
Again, I don't enforce for my personal opinions for "do"s and "don't"s so strongly anymore, but I don't think a 2020s imageboard like Heyuri would be what it is today without that solid foundation enforced by the staff and supported (or at least not heavily objected) by the users of the time.

That anon who posted it here to just put in my two cents. I've lurked for years but never posted much. I haven't posted on imageboards in general much for some years for some schizo personal reasons I won't get into. I've always understood that section of rule 8 as essentially an anti-flaming/anti-4chan culture thing, but I feel like the usage here is just a results of such shortened usage entering the common vocabulary outside of any chan context. My personal opinion is obviously 4chan things are okay to to have a harsher view on, but others should remain as signs of noobery, not to be encourage, but not necessarily bannable just judgable by the imageboard population at large in a gatekeeping sort of way. But again I'm relatively new to being active here so take that with a grain of salt.
I would say though that as admins and mods say here, yeah it was never meant to ban them in any context, so it would definitely be clearer if reworded. I got the implication that section was about flaming, but not everybody would, and it is slightly misleading IMHO. Not the biggest deal but it would be better if worded clearer.

It's been said in this thread already, but teh reason wordfilters wouldn't work out is the certain words warnings triggers being usual English words
Warnings give the last saying about their post content to the user, and it's made clear there can be false positives already

but it is a neat feature honestly (´人`)

This. Just filter every crossie no-no word as "I'M A HUGE FAGGOT PLEASE RAPE MY FACE" so even false positives within serious posts are funny and the poster gets the message loud and clear, thus naturally phasing out these words eventually.

Obscene wordfilters would be the best option in spite of the false positives "issue". I'd say that too.... perhaps it would organically drive heyurizens to diverge Linguistically and create words to avoid false positives ヽ(´ー`)ノ

western governments are leftist, so leftist nonsense being inserted into your language is linguistic protectionism at work.

it's not like politics is a b& topic on Heyuri (see R7), but this thread is past its purpose since the townhall
linguistic protectionism was brought up to compare a feature with it here - if you actually care to discuss it in general, feel free to create a thread on off-topic or lounge
