How 2 git gud? by anonymous

I’ve never draw anything before, yet alone oekaki or digital stuff, partly because I have always sucked so didn’t want to waste my time on drawing poor creatures
How can i get at least non-shitty? I am only interested in Japanese manga style

It takes dedication and practice to get anywhere with any skill, so it's just a matter of putting the work in and putting that work into the right places. Rather than wasting time creating "poor creatures", it's the repetition of drawing over and over and over again, even if you think it sux, that will allow you to improve

There are fundamental principles you'll learn that apply to all art styles - any particular art style is usually based on the same principles as everything else but with a little frosting on top to give it flavor. Anyway, there are places out there where you can find threads and resources on learning to draw, like /loomis/ https://8chan.moe/loomis/ and /ic/ https://boards.4chan.org/ic/

Thx for links, I will check them out but I guess my best bet is to create moar abominations. I don’t actually have any high ambitions about this, I just want to be able to contribute cute oekakis when I want to

Also being a total beginner, perhaps I shouldn’t look at westerner artists’ drawings as they can influence me. I can notice a very clear distinction between westerners trying to draw anime-style oekakis (including myself) and Japanese oekaki boards, which made me giving drawing a go in the first place

I was a bit early to judge, there are apparently “general” threads on /ic/ about actual anime style too. They seem to suggest copying, so here is my attempt drawing while referencing… A little progress compared to previous two works!

That's the thing - "anime art styles" aren't any different to anything other art styles for the most part, and you'll be limiting yourself far more than most actual Japanese illustrators, mangaka, animators, etc. if you only focus on copying manga/anime

Human anatomy, perspective, lighting and shadows, color theory, hand control, and so on are all essential if you want to do more than very simple drawings and sketches. The only thing that really makes a character look "manga" or "anime" are the facial features and hair styles, but there are no hard rules for this, and 95% of such artwork is still built up of the fundamentals + the artist's own personal flair

the "easy" way is to trace. trace and trace and trace. after a few hundred hours you should be decent at drawing anime characters.
