the author's father was the infinitely more famous writer Dino Segre (Pitgrilli), who in addition was also a member of the secret police in Fascist Italy. the book is set in Spain under Franco. You could probably get some anti-fascist or anti-clerical meaning from it, but it'd be a stretch. It doesn't feel like it's "just" erotica, but it isn't philosophical in the way that the works of Georges Bataille, another french-language erotica writer, were.
it's very beautiful writing with great prose, but a lot of it is dialogue. this makes it quite the easy read, and the dialogue itself is also well-written.

I'm glad you like, it was probably me who recommended it. It's my favorite book and I've read it so many times. Margaux is like my waifu. There's a part where she describes why she loves Kurt Cobain, and she says it's because he seems so damaged and only someone like him could love someone like her. Well, that's basically how I feel about Margaux. This book also recontextualized my whole childhood... I didn't realize how manipulative my mother was until I saw Peter using the same manipulation tactics on Margaux.
Beyond that, she was an amazingly skilled writer and it's tragic that she died of cancer before publishing anything else.

The father is certainly the worst person in the book and does bear the most responsibility for the family's problems. That said, there are no villains in this book; even the father is given some redeeming qualities. That's why it's so good; it refuses to let the reader place the characters (or rather, people since it is a memoir) into the easy categories of hero and villain. There's no black and white, only shades of grey.
Some people get really upset at this book because the theme isn't simply "child molester evil." Rather, the author is telling us that no one is truly evil, but we are all bad to varying degrees. That kind of nuance does not sit well with the general population.

Yeah, I totally agree with everything. I just couldn't nuance it better for the sake of joke.
I am so frustrated with him, though; he has no objective barriers to being a better father and husband, yet he actively chooses to be a dipshit. It seemed his relationship with Margaux was quite nice in her early childhood, I don't understand why he progressively started to treating her so cruelly. For example, the hair cut he gave her was straight bullying.
He had some weirdly contemporary takes, like how it's in women nature to cheat with what they seem a better (looking) guy. That echoed back with Margaux crush on Ricky, despite him being a little retarded.
Well, I hope to finish the book tonight.

Turns out the part I have had ahead of me was a breakdown of Peter's manipulations. What a selfish fucker deserving of having his scrotum amputated the moment it all started,
way before Margaux
. Him and few other rapists described in the book made me almost sympathetic with women.
Ehh... the third of the book I just read was such a devastating description. I don't know why the basement antics didn't repulse me as much as the absolute grip he had over her teenage years. Clearly, the child he adored is not there anymore, yet, he actively ruins her. If he could continue foster care, would he care for her as much?
I forgot why Margaux loved him in the first place. Could she truly, if she never found him sexually attractive? How much of it was genuine and how much was she manipulated into?
I am tired, still few chapters left.

Ok, I am glad I read it. Phenomenal!
By setting down my memories in this book, I’ve worked to break the old, deeply rooted patterns of suffering and abuse that have dogged my family through the generations. One thing I’ve learned through my writing is that because my grandparents didn’t openly deal with the sexual assaults of my mom and aunt as children, the trauma was passed down unchecked. My mother had no idea how to recognize trouble, or to shield me from it. By insisting on silence and forgetting, my grandparents were probably trying to protect their daughters from more harm, but my own story is proof that they were tragically mistaken.
Secrets are what allowed Peter’s world to flourish. Silence and denial are exactly the forces that all pedophiles rely on so their true motives can remain hidden. Going back over old papers and thinking carefully about my own experiences have exposed the many ways that Peter manipulated me and my family. As I was finishing this book, I read Conversations with a Pedophile: In the Interest of Our Children by Dr. Amy Hammel-Zabin, a prison therapist, and I became convinced of what I’d always suspected: that a sexual predator looks for children from troubled homes like mine but that he can also trick average families into thinking he’s ordinary or even an upstanding member of the community. Pedophiles are masters at deception because they also excel at self-deception: they fool themselves into believing what they do isn’t harmful.
Stored in my computer are the official 1989 court documents (which I saw last year for the first time) charging Peter with these four crimes against one of his foster children: sexual abuse, criminal sexual conduct, endangerment of the welfare of a child, and child abuse. The court deemed with certainty that Peter was “likely to respond favorably to probation.” At that time, Peter and I, having been separated, were communicating by phone; a year later, when I was eleven, he would begin a second sexual initiation with me. Since I feel that the current justice system largely fails at both convicting and rehabilitating sex offenders, it is essential, if change is to take place, to see the problem of pedophilia through the eyes of those who have dedicated their lives to studying it. In Time, Dr. Fred Berlin, the founder of the National Institute for the Study, Prevention and Treatment of Sexual Trauma, confronts this issue pragmatically: “People want to see a monster when they say ‘pedophile.’ But the best public-safety approach on pedophilia is to provide these people with treatment. That will prevent further victimization.” Berlin’s website is a possible resource for anyone who is struggling with sexual feelings toward children: www.fredberlin.com/treatmentframe.html. Antidepressants were effective for Peter in his later years, and the subject of Hammel-Zabin’s book was helped immensely by testosterone-inhibiting drugs. It’s true that strict enforcement of current penalties such as prison time for sex offenders is a vital part of the solution. Unfortunately, most pedophiles would be hard-pressed to find treatment options before a conviction has occurred. Often by the time authorities have been brought in, a sexual predator has already abused numerous children and his troubled thought processes have become so ingrained that they’re resistant to treatment. Help needs to be readily available to those who are thinking about offending; in this way, the problem can be addressed at its roots.
