How many of you guys are studying Japanese? I got fired two months ago and I'm finally at the stage of my neet journey where I want to use my life savings to go to japan and potentially live as a hobo
kana took me a few days. Then I studied kanji radicals until I realized they were useless, so now i'm just trying to master the pillars of each stage of jp
right now i'm learning all the n5 nouns, and these are the ones i didnt already know from anime

i've studied japanese to sate my linguistic curiosity but never to actually learn it.
the only language other than english i can understand to a somewhat reasonable degree is spanish. i've been really wanting to study how proto-japonic worked and evolved but it's hard to find any resources when everything requires a university login (im a NEET).

Anon is going to end up like one of those gaijin gutted for organs in Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service LOL.

I've always heard that you should start with grammar instead, since after that it's intuitive to learn new nouns and verbs by just listening.
I actually just finished working through the Michel Thomas foundational course a bit ago, good thing I downloaded these before they got nuked off youtube:
https://up.heyuri.net/src/6215.zip
It's an 8 hour pause-and-answer audio-lesson and it does a good job of actually getting you to start thinking in Japanese by the first lesson. I'd recommend it but I guess it's not enough to start catching up with anime or games straight away--in particular, you're only taught the polite verb forms with their simpler conjugation (-mas/-masen/-mashita) so I got totally lost hearing the casual verb forms for the first time.

Immersion is by far the best method, but you need to be mentally engaged for it to work. Have both spoken audio and text is ideal. If you use immersion the only things you will need to study are basic grammar (like verbs and such) and kanji.
Kanji radicals in the normal sense are useless basically, but it's a lot easier to remember a kanji like 後 if you can remember it as 彳幺夂 rather than a bunch of random strokes.

you should learn japanese, it's easy. just get anki and the kaishi 1.5k deck, start reading children's books after you know 500 ish words, do a shit ton of listening to easy stuff like japanese with shun and nihongo con teppi podcast. i'm n3 after ~2years and i think that is fairly slow, i'm going to try for the n2 test next summer. also going to japan after you have some skills with speaking is obviously really helpful, i hired a conversation tutor once a week starting a few months back and it's been huge.

i'm into nara/heian japanese linguistics and i don't have that much trouble finding open sourced papers that don't require university login, in fact most them are hosted by j-stage and NII which don't have login walls
however they are obviously in japanese, i don't think there is that much academia on kobun/japonic that isn't in japanese so i don't see how you plan to study proto-japonic when you don't have knowledge of japanese to read academia on it nor other stages of it's development to have something to compare it to...
maybe you should try picking up japanese since you'll probably enjoy it

still a newb but i've been learning for 1.5 years or so, my method is similar to other anons. i started with JLAB (japanese like a breeze), which is an anki deck with tae kim's grammar book integrated into it, i found that a good place to start.. knowing grammar first makes it much easier to understand how words are used and constructed in context(passive, volitional, causative, etc). kaishi 1.5k is a competent deck for vocab, eventually you make your own. immersion is the most important part though, for reading and listening comprehension. anki only goes so far.
imagine you're a prisoner of war in a japanese internment camp and you need to understand what those gooks are saying as quickly as possible so you they don't beat the shit out of you and take your rice rations.

I have no motivation to study (beyond reading tae kim for a single week as I was commuting some 5+ years ago), but I can understand some from consuming untranslated ero and such. Right now I can understand barely enough read LN/VNs, but for a long time it doesn't seem to have been improving

maybe you can learn it naturally, but I'd recommend going through Tae Kim first
