if you want maximum compatibility try BSD. Most programs are made to work with it

Go with arch and install it with archinstall, it has a very good installer :x3:
Dont ever under any circumstances install anything that is not explicitly open source if you wanna go the freedom route

If you are coming from windows you likely do a really privacy centric OS, you just want any decent linux OS.

I recommend an arch derivative, like CachyOS.
