Before covid my job was a scenic, 22 minute drive from my home. I worked from home during covid, and afterwards took a new job in the city. I now take a 45 minute bus ride to work, so I spend 90 minutes a day commuting. I don't even get paid for that!

But whats worse, I'm looking at a new job this summer, it's a lot better pay, almost double, but its 1hr 20 minutes train from my home! The fares would cost almost 300€ a month too... but my employer will subsidize transportation costs.

Should I take this new job? How can I make the most of spending 16 hours a week on trains?

if the pay is better and your employer pays for transportation i'd say go for it, even though 1h20m of commute feels like hell for me (;´Д`)

i used to commute to UNI for that long
people weren't that noisy so i could read book or manga (sometimes very rarely study on it)

personaly I would take the pay cut over commuting that long : train disgust me
i prefer physical book and manga
and i could go to the gym or cook something nice or watch anime or play vidya in that time

I don't understand how can people stomach being so far away from their home. Teh ideal is not going outside at all, but if I have to go to a specific place in a regular basis anyways, it should at least be in proximity to my bedroom!

Mine is 15-20 minutes by car. I would totally accept a longer commute if I didn't have to actually pay attention and drive during it. Even better if my employer pays for it.

my father used to have to make a 2h commute and he usually drove, I have ZERO idea how he managed that (・∀・)

he managed that because he knew he had a son/daughter he loved very much at home who needs to live his/her life happily without worrying about anything else 💗

10 minutes to the local mart, but I always get there 50 minutes early and sit in my hot car

money or freedom.
You could take teh job and do it for a few years untill you manage to burn yourself out from all teh daily commute. It will eat you inside as it will feel as all you do is work, as commute will be work. But if u haev teh mindset that its all for a purpose and as long as you don't waste all your money on stupid shit, it might be worth it. I had a 60min commute before i moved, and it was terrible. It was exhausting. Currentily i've a 30min walk, but that's something i find to be relaxing. So it's not teh time itself, but rather teh mindset. But still, while walking i can go in my own pace. I say, take teh job, you don't know if u will haet it before u start - and u might just find something to use teh time on teh commute that u find worthwhile.

lots of japanese people take the train and back in the 2000s I think they dealt with it by getting a DS or a PSP and playing games on it while commuting, which is what they would have been doing at home anyway. have you tried getting into monster hunter?

About a 10 minute walk.
I live in an urban area and the restaurant I work at is just down the road.
A long train commute isn't so bad if you can sit down and play games or watch anime on the phone, but if it's crowded and you have to stand it's hell.

Depends on how full the trains normally are and whether or not you like reading.
If there are almost always vacant seats such that you can sit down and read a book, it doesn't sound too bad.

teh truth is that, sometimes you wont feel like reading a book or playing games etc etc. I can say this as i used to commute, and after work, you sometimes are dead tierd and just wanna come home. Playing isnt fun etc etc

Lately I've been riding a bike to work (about 40 mins one way). It's nice now that it's warm outside but the hard seat is bruising my ass (´~`)
