What are /b/'s thoughts on having a thread dedicated to the history of Imageboards? Lately I've been cataloging my old chan folders, and in order to do it accurately, I've had to scour a lot of archives and old personal wiki sites; and whenever I do this, it never ceases to blow me away at how the foundation of so many weeb-centric wikis, boorus and so on are connected to random imageboards from the 03-06 range.

I basically want this thread to be a roundtable, where we discuss the origins of small-time Imageboards, where questions like "who was the founder" and "what IB/group/board general did this site splinter off from" are answered.
I'll start things off by asking about the origin of a board I've seen advertised on here that looks pretty nice: https://hikari3.ch/

you can still read old SA/4chan drama on some kareha board's archive
I didn't watch the video because I don't really care, early 4chan was a fun place but there is nothing that makes the actions of individual people involved in early 4chan that special :sweat2:

It's a board made by a Heyuri user some years ago, we have a wiki page on them that's yet to be fleshed out
https://wiki.heyuri.net/index.php?title=Hikari3

For general history of imageboards including developments in 90s Japan, read this article: https://wiki.heyuri.net/index.php?title=Imageboard

Almost regret linking to that vid since it's a divisive ultracrepidarianist rant by a dude who, albeit was around since the beginning, has made it his mission in life to make people on the internet angry, and it could very easily derail it or outright discourage people from posting
I'm pretty well informed when it comes to the general history of the proto-2ch, mid-90s underground bbs scene. This thread in particular is about imageboards influenced by 4chan, which is essentially all of them, with the exception of the Japanese ones, and the Asian ones inspired by those (ACG boards and the like)

idk if it still exists and i don't feel like looking for it but there used to be a wiki by one of the early 4chan devs named shii that had a lot of information about early 4chan history and culture

Everything's all scattered in regards to the much older imageboards... I find it kind of hard to find as a imageboard newb. I was interested previously in trying to write some vague history of 4chan on our wiki as part of our BBS culture, particularly when I realized w*rld2ch was connected to it, but i found it too overwhelming to invest the time into... (´人`)
I'm sure it's trivial to find, just scroll through teh original SA thread long enough, but it's tedious..

on the topic of Hikari3, I don't quite remember how it started, but i know for sure it atleast had some roots in Heyuri. I can personally say syrno is connected to heyuri, i last saw him in a Cytube in i think late 2025, and a few times before that. We had them in our links page and i think had a banner up too, but i believe during their recent overhaul they forgot to re-add us. That got fixed recently though.

We had a chess tournament at some point that involved a bunch of BBSes (half of which didn't show up) and Hikari3 won, but i never added that to the page. I'll probably do it after this post.

One I don't know very much about is Kissu. I think it's been around for a while, but i have no idea how it came about, nor what it's been doing.

They have a FAQ:
https://kissu.moe/faq
>What is Kissu?
>Kissu is an imageboard created by Verniy and Cool-Guy in 2018 with help from users who left 4chan's /qa/ board. It uses a custom-built user interface inspired by CCD0's 4chanX extension running on top of a heavily modified Vichan engine. It hosts a variety of Japanese themed content and strives to keep it easy.

I don't want to get too much into it since it involves a lot of Rule 8 garbage, but basically kissu is made up of the anime/otaku crowd who used to gather in /qa/ (treating it as some type of "2D/Random" board - 4chanX even renamed the board to that by default in response) before it was taken over by the s*yjak spammer crowd (who later also moved to their own sites)
>>
realizing kaguya was a admin on the s*yjak site, heyuri, gurochan, and a 4chan mod all at once... the illuminati is real
