Those of us who studied in the west may have heard his name during High School Literature class. You may be familiar with some of his works, including but not limited to:

Les 120 Journées de Sodome ou l'école du libertinage ,
Justine, ou Les Malheurs de la Vertu ,
and
L'Histoire de Juliette ou les Prospérités du vice

Let's take a look at his most famous novel, 120 Days of Sodom

The story is set in an isolated and inaccessible castle, the Chateau de Silling, deep inside the black forest. Four wealthy and powerful French libertines (hedonists, essentially) seclude themselves there for several months.

They gather up a harem of local french boys and girls, including their own daughters, eight teenage and pre-teenage boys, and 8 teenage and pre-teenage girls. The 16 boys and girls having been kidnapped from local families. To serve alongside these captured sex slaves are 8 young men with exceptionally large cocks, and four elderly, hideous deformed hags to serve as maids.

The Marquis goes into great detail about the beauty of the captured children and the hideousness of the hags. The hags are described as having giant abcesses in their ass from which rotting flesh fills the smell of any room they enter. They are missing teeth, some are missing eyeballs. They are fat and with hideiously large noses, balding, and covered in scabs.

The 4 libertines, having assembled everyone, lay out the rules for their 120 days of debauchery. Principally, they seek to indulge in every possible fetish imaginable. It is to culminate, the young girls are told, in their death through various means of torture.

It covers... just about everything.

This clearly gave the Marquis a huge hard on. He loved debasing sacred things, and in 18th century catholic France, the following passages were about as edgy as one could get.
