why would you want to use subtitles if you're trying to learn japanese? you'll end up only being able to read without understanding what people are saying. besides, the biggest upside of learning japanese is to actually watch the show instead of having your eyes glued to the bottom 1/3rd of the screen the whole time

subtitles help parse speech and also are super helpful to differentiate words for learners. I've read a lotttt more than I've actively listened or talked and my comprehenshion probably goes up by half with subs on

>>170269 obviously it doesn't take long to read the subtitles. the average heyuri user manages to do it so it can't be so hard. but when you say it "doesn't register" it's not because you're not looking away from the action, it's because you don't realise you are. try disabling the subtitle track next time you watch anime and you'll see what i mean. less time reading = more time looking at anime girls
