I just opened up my old discontinued Toshiba Satellite (customized matte screen panel), changed the thermal paste, and reattached the temperature sensor. Ordered a new battery, and ordered 16 GB of RAM to max out and replace the old 8 GB.
What OS should I install on it?
And what would you suggest doing on it (other than browsing Heyuri, of course)?

Since I already have all kinds of computers, I'm going to install Linux on it with a minimal X11 setup that boots directly into Mac OS 9 (via Sheepshaver).

Triple boot MacOS, Arch Linux and Windows. Why pick? 1TB is plenty for the three.

I already have a gaming Windows, a work Windows, and a work macOS.
I swapped the DVD drive for a 1 TB SSD, so I have a massive amount of space here for all kinds of messing around with Linux. But for now, installing a minimal Debian that boots into an emulated old Mac OS system for nostalgia and browsing Heyuri. Might add more partitions as I feel like it.

Fair enough then. Why not DingusPPC rather than SheepShaver? Was your nostalgia more with the 68k era?
Running silly foreign operating systems like Red Star and EulerOS could be funny, maybe give that shot?

I ran from System 7 onwards, but my nostalgia is certainly PPC. I did not know about this new emulator, though. I looked it up and it says it's very much work in progress. What are it's advantages and drawbacks compared to sheepshaver?
>>161491
Pic related.
Also I can't Heyuri from my fake mac because Classilla throws a hissy fit about SSL protocols.

We're talking old Macs? Cool story. I've got an actual PPC Mac running Mac OS 9.2.2. I've set up WebOne on my main PC (thanks
>>161516
-san) just so I can post from this near-25 year old beaut. I've recently installed Kaleidoscope (a popular theming extension for Classic Mac OS) and Snapz Pro 2 (in order to take screenshots from the G4 itself). I'm very happy with my old Mac.

I remember Kaleidoscope! I had a Power Macintosh at my parents' with 9.2 that still worked, but my mom threw it out.
There's a Portable in the basement with System 6 installed, but the PSU is fried.
So my shitty Toshiba fake Mac is all I got

It's alright. Your "fake Mac" can still be useful. You could browse Heyuri on it or do some Photoshop work. I've got UT99 to run at around 60-ish FPS by turning down the video settings and keeping it at 640x480. I sadly couldn't post a screengrab of the game from the machine itself as I tried converting the image to BMP on Photoshop to no avail. (why do you even support BMP when you can't even fucking use the damn format, Heyuri)
There's better ways to play UT99 on modern hardware, but oh well!

While DingusPPC is, yeah, indev, it's decently functional for people to use it for vintage mac development. I know that the group of people porting Mac OS and Windows NT PPC to the wii (directly on the hardware, not through that Mac On Linux thing) use it.
DingusPPC is more accurate i think, since it doesn't patch the ROM and RAM, instead opting to directly emulate the hardware. It also runs the newer mac stuff, up to OS X 10.4. It got ported to the web and is what infinite mac runs:
https://infinitemac.org/
If you're too lazy to download it and set it up with the adequate rom files, you can just try it through infinitemac. I find it to work pretty well, though, since im more of an early OS X guy, i never tried out SheepShaver for long enough to say that it's directly better or worse than the latter.

-san here, I completely forgot that I had the option to save PNGs 'cuz I put Photoshop 4 on my Mac. Thanks for letting me know (even if you got the post number wrong). Here's the UT99 screengrab I've been wanting to show, in case. (I had to manually put the extension or I'd get the same 'unsupported image' error as my earlier attempt. Just another Classic Mac OS quirk or something.)

remember, old-school MacOS doesn't care about file extensions, it stores 4 character file and creator codes to determine file types
you might want to download resedit if you end up with a file you can't open in a Mac program as a result even though you know it's fine (it's also just useful, you can edit icons and shit with it)
the resource fork was a bad idea (I think modern macOS still uses it but for almost nothing these days) but it was also pretty cool
