Hey /b/. I need some advice.
What do you do if you're juggling depression/ADHD, but don't have access to meds and won't until an evaluation for either is performed, but you hate everything about your life and want at least one thing that makes you happy in the long run?
I like piano, but I'm awful at it and need someone to direct me, because everything besides eating, breathing and shitting is too complicated for me. I had a teacher, but I was too slow (stuck on the first few pages of the children's level piano book for 6 months) so I ended up quitting because I didn't have much money then... well I still don't.
I know the obvious solution is to just quit, but I know if I do I'll just end up killing myself, and that'd be one less poster on heyuridotnet...
I guess what I want is someone to pump me up, or teach me the correct way to move forward with piano. I'm still at the same level I was when I quit back then, and that was the beginning of this year.

This shit is nature's amphetamine. If you do have ADHD, it should help. Just don't mention that you used it when you get evaluated though or they'll think you're a speed freak.

Mental health aside, piano (and any other sufficiently complex instrument) is just one of those things where you have to keep practicing for many hours, over many days, over many years to get any good at it - and don't just play the same thing over and over again or else you'll never make progress

Oh believe me, I'm aware. I just don't know how to progress.
Like, so many people say so many different things about improving.
"you need a teacher!"
"you need to focus on ear training"
"you need to learn how to sightread"
"if you didn't start taking piano lessons at an early age, it's over"
And if you don't pick the right choices in the correct order, or focus on the "wrong things" you'll end up fucking over your progress and you'll never be able to properly play the piano.
It's so much I just don't know how to structure myself. I remember when I had a teacher, she'd ask me "what do you want to accomplish" and "what type of music do you want to play". Naturally, if I had responded with "I want to play high level stuff that I like to listen to" I would've sounded completely naive and retarded, so I just said "classical music" because I figured that's what all the pros start out with. Everything that sounds good is just really fast paced harmonic information with excellent rhythm (aka classical music but with some jazzy spice to it). Naturally, we never got through a single song because I couldn't sightread.

I've been practicing for a few hours since I made this thread
but typically 0 hours a day, yeah
I did some "ear training" aka recreating melodies I hear in songs, and some noodling. Now I'm practicing sight reading and it's p hard.
I'm used to mnemonics but those never work in the long run so i've been watching this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSOU-J9KHbg
and there's no way im remembering all that the next day

Just keep rewatching if you forget, the key to almost everything is just practice. I found that using DAWs (specifically the piano-roll) could help you a bit to associate the notes and stuff. Try making a MIDI for a simple song in FL Studio or your free DAW of choice.

This is going to sound super weird, but back when I felt that way, I went to see a psychiatrist, and he got me on meds for depression.
The meds did little except give me an excuse to act as if I should move forward. And move forward I did. I started exercising, stopped smoking, got my degree sorted out (finally). But that is beside the point.
I discovered occultism. And this is where it gets weird. It's not that occultism is the key to anything, but that it was the thing that really made my heart sing, and I didn't know it until then.
My point is that there was something out there that made my life worth living, and I didn't know it. You have the privilege of knowing what that thing is.
>the obvious solution is to just quit
No, that's not the obvious solution. Where did you get that idea? The obvious thing to do, if piano is what makes your heart sing, is to pursue it no matter what. If you have found that thing your soul yearned for all your life, you should have no qualms about pursuing it. If you don't feel this invincible motivation, the situation might be more complicated.
Now, if there are underlying issues that are making you feel this way, the first step is seeking therapy. Even if it might end up being useless on its own, just having the very intention of trying to fix your situation already puts you in a better position than you are now, and will lead you where you need to be. So MOVE.
If you kill yourself, you are going to achieve nothing, by the way. You'll find yourself very confused and will feel like a moron after you realize you go on, and your problems do too. So face them.
A side effect of being cursed to exist forever is that sooner or later, you're going to overcome everything.

Like another heyurizen said, 6 months is nothing. It would take you 5 years of practicing 3 hours a day minimum to get to a stage where you could begin to consider pursuing a career in music, and even then it would depend on whether you're willing to dedicate yourself fully to it. Many people abandon at this stage because they want to have a life.
If it's really what you like the most, you should do it for pleasure, and not get hung up on being "stuck on children's level scores".
