Hello heyuri
I do not recommend veracrypt
Please use luks if you value your stashes, time and energy bills
Luks is not hard. Infinitely faster and compatibile with your fridge if you really want to store cheese pizza on fridges, you can get your drive encrypted and decrypted even by pinging your computer from remote taliban radio towers carried by sexiest goats of the mountains.
In contrast veracrypt is slow, hard to use, forces you to do dumb rituals where it asserts dominance over you (like forcing you to plug in a usb drive for a mandatory decryption header for system encryptions), I could not get it to support multiple keys and I don't care because I will not do research for it, any modern encryption should have it in GUI because windows is GUI and I used it on windows. Windblows! Also their creators seem gay because they have a company set up with copyrights for veracrypt and microsoft recommends them so they must work for gay NSA or something.
My main complaint is how stupidly slow it encrypts files. I have my HDDs at steady 130-140mb/s write but veracrypt encrypts it at some 3mb/s or something (they are not even clear about it because they only show you percentage and not actual sizes like all software made for clinical retards!!!). It takes ages. If they said 'sorry, we know it is slow and we won't do anything about it' then I would drop my files to another HDD for a bit, then wipe and implement encryption to the original drive and drop files back in once drive is fit for storage. It is infinitely faster, as if encryption was not slow but veracrypt makes it slow, for who knows whose benefit or sick pleasure.
Veracrypt is also unclear about their definition of keys. I wiped a wrong drive that contained the sole key for my veracrypt archive drive and only realized it after I wrote over data. That was my bad. But I thought since my key was an image I had downloaded from pixiv especially that it does hash of the first 1024kb they say. Since I moved around my earlier loli porn keys from drive to drive with no problems I assumed that it is fine and no metadata hash bullshittery would occur, and so I'd believed I could just redownload the image and decrypt it but I was wrong. They don't provide documentation on how it all works because COPYRIGHTS probably like all of them. How is SHA256 worth copyrighting? Or your dogma of keys? Common knowledge at this point.
I had assumed it to be retardproof like all windows supporting programs, especially since some functions were so dumbed down and even had a nanny prompts that would prevent you from shredding all data constantly or refusing to work until our little boy picks a better password! I did not even want to but it made me combine a file key with a password for some ungodly reason. I simply wanted smugging zundamon to be my key. No! Rabbitfield must have it hard! You can move around and change metadata appearently but not when you download it! DAME DESU!!! DAME DESU!!! So I lost the entire drive.
I'm not so much of a dummy to not have a backup, but I lost most of newer files from this january until now and I blame veracrypt. I know I should've made a copy of the key and pay more attention to what I wipe, but it still is a pain in the ass. Imagining people who trust these devils with their data and have no backups is so sad. Besides I buy electronics in bulk and names of my drives look the same in the terminal ;_;
Luks can serve many different keys, I have not read or checked but I would blindly bet you could make an entire system of permissions with different keys and data pieces while veracrypt would never do it. Luks decrypts my root in like 3 or 4 seconds while booting up windows from veracrypt takes like 30 seconds and windows is on a faster drive than linux. How bad. Why is veracrypt so slow? Any pentium with luks would outcompete i9 with veracrypt it appears.
I wanted to have a copy of my dearest parts of archive available for windows in the worst case, and one with much more sensible and mature linux ways. I can't get windows to read ext4 but I can get linux to read NTFS. In case I have no linux lying around I could still manage my archives with windows. Now I'm synchronizing my remaining copy to that bad veracrypt windows drive now that it had been properly wiped into ext4 luks. Luks never failed me, every time when I had problems with it they were purely because I was the moron. It will still take about 3 more hours, currently at 140mb/s being transferred from a luks drive to another luks drive. It is very good for HDDs. I can make tea on my HDD. I could actually attempt making tea on it next time I overwork them. Interesting idea.
Today I dug in guts of my linux instance and -----EVENTUALLY----- fixed my issues and it runs faster most of things than windows now. I feel good and I learned things. I finally know how my distro works for the most part.

Man, I just don't bother with encryption since everything is illegal anyway. If they could ban breathing oxygen, they would.

Correct me if I'm wrong as I have never used veracrypt before.
You said that you used an image downloaded from pixiv as the key. Is it possible the file on pixiv have been modified between the first and second time you downloaded it?
Maybe the artist updated the post with a new image. Maybe pixiv has messed with the file in some way (like that time when they removed EXIF data from existing images
https://github.com/Nandaka/PixivUtil2/issues/807
)
If that's the why it doesn't decrypt, maybe you can try your luck reverse search the image and see if you can find the original image on any boorus or anywhere on the net.
I think an image on gelbooru or danbooru would be a better option for this use case, since you can search for images with a md5. You can write down the md5 somewhere so you can be sure you're using the same image.

Not much work, luks is like 3 commands and ready to go, and you can embed automatically decrypting and mounting all your drives on system boot
I enjoy it a lot :3

I am not sure what happened. Metadata could change like date of last access or something and it would still work, though when I redownloaded the key it broke. I already wiped the failed veracrypt container. Now I'm figuring out why linux guys hate anything even associated with windows.
This is what I wanted as a key
https://www.pixiv.net/artworks/113132831
It's ok now. I will spam negative reviews and spread rumours on veracrypt to scare people off.
