I don't wanna spoil Initial D but in the first season despite everything, Takumi was able to win not only because of his car or even skill. His opponents were also partially at fault for losing.
But MF Ghost, none of that, just dumb magic. And Initial D too, but in the later seasons.

Almost all motorsports are decided by stupid mistakes like losing grip, spinning out, locking tires, braking late, mechanical failures, etc...
so initial d is still in the realm of reality
the most unrealistic thing in the show in my opinion is takumi never making a mistake once. (he b0rked the car twice) but i mean a mistake in cornering or braking.
