Framework laptops seem cool and I like their support for R2R but as a broke college student the specs aren't that great for the price tag 😖

First time I hear of this brand unsure
>>
those framework 12s dont look too bad nyaoo-closedeyes only 499 in our beautiful british shores... whrnever they get delivered...
>>
I was interested in getting one, but teh high price meant I went for a second-hand Dell business laptop instead ヽ(´ー`)ノ
>>
i saw it on youtube too... seems like an ad campaign. refurbished laptop is always a better option
>>
To me, these things really just project, "There are too many competing standards. We need a new standard!"
>>
this computer is fugly as all hell get an ibm thinkpad instead you pussy
>>

that has been the case forever
all I care about is that if shit goes wrong, I can get the part to unfuck it and it isn't a pain in the ass to unfuck, and the framework checks both of those boxes

if I needed a new laptop, I'd get one, but I haven't needed one

If anything, a laptop company that has a clear goal of making a product that appeals to the DIY/Software Freedom side of the tech community would be the least "useless new standard" type of company

This entire thing is just a marketing ploy to sell overpriced crap to the desperate right-to-repair crowd and people who are angry at their macbooks. It doesn't serve anyone's actual needs.

If you actually wanted to approach their mission statement as a product designer, there's countless things they could do to accomplish it way better than this. You could excuse the shoddy build quality if the laptop actually was highly modular and customizable, but there's barely anything to actually customize about it other than the USB ports, and they didn't even go all-in on those.

"Look you can take out the hard drive and RAM!" well guess what, you can also do that on countless other laptops that are higher quality and cost less.
"Look you can take out the screen panel! it's attached with magnets!" I can count the amount of laptops whose screen I've broken with 0 hands because it has never happened, and even if it happened once per 5 years then unscrewing the chassis from a normal laptop for such a niche repair really wouldn't be a big deal.

Where's different decorative paint jobs and color options? Where's different touchpads with buttons and crap? Where's different keyboard layouts like TKL or one with a touch point? More expensive LCD panels for artists? These matter a lot to the user and would be some of the easiest and cheapest things to provide alternatives for, and one of the most compelling reasons to buy one since you could fix all your personal nitpicks that you have with laptops, but the best they could do is slap an awkward numpad next to the awkward generic laptop keyboard.

It's easier to get a custom laptop from some random Clevo reseller, it'll be cheaper and better quality too. The only thing you'll miss out on is led light panels next to your keyboard.

the whole open infrastructure thing feels weird. in a way it feels like they're trying to get their community to do the interesting bits for them.
id be lying if i said i wouldnt be interested in getting one because of parts avaliability and their motherboards being really backwards compatible. thanks to that it has alot of resale value when i want to get rid of it so ┐(゚~゚)┌

Also I'd gladly pay more for a more rigid aluminium or brushed metal -style chassis. Put all the cheap shit on it by default, and then charge as much as you need/feel like for the premium options.
>>

most of this post is okay, but screens getting fucked is common shit for any portable device and you will see scores of laptops on the used market whose sole issue is a cracked screen

I've wanted a framework for a long time. But no buttons on touchpad is teh sux0rz dark
Maybe someone will make one.

Which ones that also have modern hardware?
And you forgot, you can also remove the USB port and the touchpad and the keyboard and the screen and...
Plus, if you're a schizo like me, you enjoy the privacy controls (cuts out the microphone and camera properly, I've only seen that in pinebooks before).

But until there are the parts I want, it's pure trash angry

Tongfang these days, Clevo is basically dead

Where can I find them, especially in Europe? According to my "research", they only do designs, they don't actually do laptops per se. I checked out a few companies that sell their design, and they all seem to no longer sell them. Alibaba also had nothing specific.
