What's the consensus on the Sega Dreamcast around here? nyaoo

meh
>>
I haven't played any of its games, to be honest
>>
neat machine
VERY loud disc drive
the controller sucks
Crazy Taxi is a 9/10
there aren't that many strong exclusives, even ignoring things that got ported like 10 years after it left the market, but the library is pretty decent all the same
>>
戦国turb is teh best game on this console check it out

I'm very much a fighting game guy myself, and the DC managed to deliver, with arcade-perfect ports of stuff like Mahvel (i.e. MVC2, considering the NAOMI is what the DC's based off) or CVS2 (which it's arcade version also ran on NAOMI). Don't even get me started on SoulCalibur. The system's still getting a healthy stream of homebrew even to this very day. In the wise words of Namco's most well-known DC port (the aforementioned SoulCalibur), the legend will never die.

Also check out F.I.D alongside the original game if you've got the chance. Thanks for recommending this obscure, yet interesting Japan-only gem.

there are definitely a fair few top-shelf Genesis games, but if you're looking for stuff like what Nintendo was putting out... get a SNES lol, Sega wasn't doing games like that

if I mention a series name, I am including all the games in it
* Streets of Rage (if playing 3, play Japanese Bare Knuckle 3 because they fucked up the US version bad)
* Gunstar Heroes (chaser+lightning is cheating, but you should probably do it for your first run through the game anyway)
* Castlevania Bloodlines (honestly, my favorite CV game)
* Contra Hard Corps (US release removes the health system and goes back to 1-hit kills - apparently it isn't changed beyond that in difficulty though; abuse the slide, this game isn't nearly as hard as people claim)
* Musha Aleste (this one is on a lot of lists but I think it has a few too many dead bits where you're just kinda sitting there bored - 11/10 soundtrack though and I think it's still fun as fuck)
* Thunder Force (why the fuck did they change the name of 4 in the US)
* Alien Soldier (why the fuck did we not get this in the US on cartridge - allegedly, it was distributed via some download service back in the day; the controls are a bit fucked up and there are a ton of things you need to look up before going in or you'll time out on the very first boss, like how an empty gun actually does damage (a lot of it even!), or how the reflect mechanic works so you can refill your life and do the super attack and one-hit kill the first boss)
* Puyo Puyo 2 (the fact that there wasn't an export version of PP, even if rebranded, with the Puyo 2 mechanics is fucked up, PP2 is absurdly better than PP1 mechanically; the MD version is actually like arcade perfect beyond the voices since the arcade board is basically a Genesis with better audio hardware)
* Shinobi, Shadow Dancer (Shadow Dancer my favorite of the lot to play, Shinobi 3 has the wow factor, and The Revenge of Shinobi is still good despite being a hard as fuck 1989 release)
* Ristar (very pretty late release by Sega)

there's some shit I personally like too that might not get on the mega-hit classics lists
* OutRun (not the greatest port, but plays pretty well and is easier than arcade, OutRun 2019 is pretty fun too if a bit aesthetically drab)
* Space Harrier II (slightly janky launch title, but it's fucking Space Harrier with new levels and cool bosses, it's overall just cool as fuck)
* Granada (very cool top-down tank game, although it lacks that wow factor, it feels great to play)

I'm almost certainly missing a fair few games.

i didnt even know there were other consoles other than the ps2 and xbox when i was a kid
i thought the ps2 was the thing 99% of people used, the xbox was for people with no games and the pc was for rich people
i was pretty surprised to learn the dreamcast was superior to the ps2 spec-wise
>>
>>131840
Unfortunately the lower-specced console outperformed the others sales-wise due to the fact that it could also act as a DVD player, a two-in-one deal that was so good, Sony even miscalculated the PS2's total amount of units sold for a long time.
>>
>>131843
it's not the first time i hear this, but is the ps2 being also a dvd player really that important? i dont think anyone bought a ps2 with that in mind, i'm willing to bet many didn't even know it could play movies, though i was gifted my ps2 so i dont know if the box had some text advertising such capabilities

in no world is the PS2 weaker than the DC and I say that as someone who was fucking furious 24 years ago when the DC died over the PS2

the PS2 has a higher fill rate, more RAM, faster processor, DVD (faster drive and more storage)
the DC has a much less insane architecture, but it is absolutely 2 years behind the PS2 and it shows
early DC->PS2 conversions suck ass, so they paint a favorable picture for the DC, but I suspect Sega would have wanted a new machine by 2004 if they had survived past 2001

honestly, the recent attempt to port GTA3 to DC really showcases a lot of stuff the DC lacks vs the PS2
it isn't unfathomably far behind, but it is behind

also, there is also no world in which Burnout 3 runs on DC lol
the PS2 version uses its fancy vector processing abilities, while the Xbox version just uses the fact that a Pentium 3 eclipses all the other console CPUs several times over lol
allegedly, the GameCube was considered too slow for it, and the GC is also significantly more powerful than the DC
>>
>>131844
I did lol. My PS2 spent most of its early life doing 2 things: PS1 games and DVDs.
It was too convenient. I was going to get a used PS1 and a DVD player, but I instead got a used PS2. It was several years before I actually bought a PS2 game lmao.
