Japs excelled at animating mechanical parts in the 80s and 90s, it was what they were best know for in the west. The magical girls and physics-defying boobs only came later. It's no coincidence that a lot of depictions of japanophiles (the term weebs is from 2000s) in media from back then show them as fans of mecha
