I've never actually had a problem running a visual novel, other sort of games are usually more annoying. I shouldn't've even mentioned it if it's all anyone is going to talk about ITT..
>>
>>111316
I have already played Saya no Uta, I though it was good.

You don't like the writing? I thought it was very well written, probably the only VN I've played which has had an actually interesting theme, it feels a lot like a lovecraft story, but with loli.

learn to read more you lazy bastard
every visual novel takes much longer than the average book
any generic book from a novel series you find will take maybe 12-15 hours to read, but visual novels are considered short if they're less than 20 hours long, and 40 is normal, and some of them can easily reach 80 hours long
you're really limiting yourself if you think length is an issue, because ALL visual novels are super long by book standards
>>
YU-NO is a point and click game/visual novel bastard child, for me i'm about 20 hours in and now i'm on the final part, although an hour or two of that is from me having the game up in the background
if i had to guess it'd only take about 25 hours to complete for you, which is shortish for a vn
it also has a lot of women, sex scenes with every girl (even your mother), and the main character is somewhat of a pervert
the game runs on pc98 so you can just use an emulator which might run on linux (neko project II is what i use)
i can upload the HDI (rom) file with the english patch if you're interested

I have a pretty low tolerance for long books as well. Typically I read short stories and novellas and watch movies instead of long TV shows. I really don't see the point in playing a 40 hour long game when it has the same 'value' (as I see it) as a 5 hour game. If otaku stuff was able to be shorter and more to the point I'd probably like it a lot more.

eh? visual novels have always been more worthwhile than most games i've played
they really dont share anything in common with manga or anime, its way more submersive
also, who the hell only plays 5 hour games? glare1

if something is enjoyable,
longer = bettar
the only possible downside of consuming long things is if u have some kind of stupid principle of finishing media once started, and the series turn out to be boring. Luckily for me, I have low standards as long as girls are cute biggrin

play Galaxy Fraulein Yuna 1 and 2 on the PC-Engine CD
they're fairly short and fun ☺

you use linux so it shouldn't be too hard to figure this out
install mednafen (emulator) and mednaffe (GUI frontend that makes mednafen much less of a pain in the ass)

first game patch:
http://stargood.org/trans/yuna.php

second game patch:
http://stargood.org/trans/yuna2.php

you'll need wine to use the provided batch files and tools, run wine cmd while in the folder and then run the batch file
or just do the patching on a Windows machine lol
CD game patching is always kind of a hassle vs just "here's my rom, here's an IPS/BPS" but it's not that hard.

the game images can be found here:
https://archive.org/download/nec_pc-engine-cd_turbografx-cd
first game is
Ginga Ojousama Densetsu Yuna (Japan) (FAAT, FABT, FACT).zip
second game is
Ginga Ojousama Densetsu Yuna 2 - Eien no Princess (Japan) (FABT).zip

these are "split bin" releases when following the instructions, I have never seen the non-split ones

emulator BIOS:
https://archive.org/download/nointro.tg-16
[BIOS] Super CD-ROM System (Japan) (v3.0).7z
extract it and mv the .pce file to ~/.mednafen/firmware/syscard3.pce

these aren't exactly groundbreaking games to a modern VN player, but they're cute, short, and very entertaining and I wanted more when I was done (^Д^)
the production values are excellent and they're considered fairly classic by the nihonjin

and Yuna is so cute... (*´人`*)

oh yeah, there's also the Sailor Moon PC-Engine one but I didn't actually play it yet

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon (Japan).zip is the file on the CD download page
and
http://stargood.org/trans/bssm_pcecd.php
is the download link
you'd set it up in the same way as the Yuna games

there are interactive segments here and there but the vast majority is just a straight VN affair
the art is nowhere as nice as in Yuna but oh well
