Why do people still call these types 'alternative'? Goth girls today are as popular in the mainstream as the Gibson Girl once was. And they look about as Victorian, too :biggrin::emo::emo:

I actually think there's no longer any such thing as an 'alternative scene'. Such things, as they are popularly understood, relied on a certain venue (club, city, town etc) which clustered previously disparate tendencies in one place until suddenly people felt something particular taking shape--basically by accident. Whatever obscure needs or artistic itch was once scratched by the formation of such groups is now handled remotely and in many differing venues dedicated to many different audiences. This is both far more convenient for the individual and far less conducive for the formation of a 'scene'.
