the unadulterated racism was a principle of the old imageboard culture so I think Heyuri did that one right considering the point of the website

So this is a "think of a website idea for me" thread? My idea is create a forum/board/whatever else social media without javascript and css (without looking like total garbage). Not sure if anyone did that before, but maybe it will be fun!

it's not easy to make something that'll last a long time and a lot of it is about being in the right place at the right time but you will benefit by choosing a format that hasn't been used much on the western web so theres a reason to use it.

Theres a huge amount of untranslated japanese scripts out there

the one trade-off though is that Japan is the land of the rising masochists and have the worst mod tools ever

so you should learn how 2 code and how to code in perl if you dont already.

Heyuri is one of the few places online where I feel like the jokes are legitimately just a form of shocking/silly humor and not a front for real bigotry. You never really know but I appreciate this being the one place I can spam and not get a bunch of infographics about crime statistics and haplogroups.

The idea of using untranslated japanese scripts is interesting in theory, though, I’d want to weigh that against maintainability and moderation, I think bad tools can kill a community faster than anything else. So, I’m mainly focused on makin something usable and sustainable first, then experimenting with format once the foundation is dealt with.

there are already many boards that cover pretty much every interest i have that work without js so i'm good with that. i just wish 4chan and teh social media internetz (disc*rd, tikt*k, inst*gram..) would go away forever

A good userbase and shared interests. Technical things matter and give a place character, but are secondary to having interesting people there to talk to.
OP have you done any webdev before or are you just spitballing? I wouldn't recommend it, it's a ridiculously fiddly process, I'd probably just play with writing toy CGI scripts for a while.

CSS is essential for having a sane layout, let alone a nice looking website, but going without JS is pretty easy. It's a bit janky, but you can even do live updates by splitting up a page into three CGI scripts: One for sending a post/message, one for viewing an extant thread/message-log, and one just to hold the other two. The post CGI can reload without disturbing the page, and the send one can either reload on a timer or just never finish loading. I'm pretty sure that's how COMCHAT works, and it's how my website works...It's probably not a problem if I post it here, right?

Also if it explodes, it's because my jewish ISP wants to charge me $10/mo to upgrade from 2GB -> 4GB of RAM (No really, they're literally HQ'd in Israel) and I was an idiot and used a VM-based language for CGI scripting so it's constantly running into memory issues.
Does anyone here have any suggestions on server providers?
