because america still thinks japan is the same japan as 1998 or 2006, a lot of otaku in america havent figured out globalism's ugly hand has touched japanese society, when they go to akihabara they expect to see dejiko billboards and crowded showa-style hold-over streets not nigerians and souless korean-style city architecture.
