I’m trying to figure out ways to make my day at work move along quicker instead of feeling painfully slow—what are some things I can do to help the time pass more smoothly?

Depends on what you do, if you are at a computer yu can browse heyuri, read, listen to podcasts, pretty much everything you'd do at home while pretending to work, which is why office jobs rule.

What if your boss just gets sadistic pleasure out of taking 8+ hours a day from you and he doesn't care what you're doing on the computer, as long as you're stuck in his office all day? He's willing to pay your laughably small wage in exchange for taking most of your life from you, like a time-sucking vampire.
