if the issue is an old pc, godot or defold are light enough to run fine. if its still too crap, you can just make flash games instead using old tutorials. there are still loyalists out there that make modern flash games, like that Epic Battle Fantasy guy.
you cant expect to be given advice on a engine not updated since 2013. if he moves over now, some of the core knowledge from game dev like state machines and stuff will carry over
