I like it a lot - i consider it to be one of teh best anime to come out past 10 years. It might look childish - but it's very much darker than it looks. Once you go down into teh pit - there's no coming back. Unless...

the first season is excellent, then the quality starts to drop with the movie and reaches rock bottom with the ending of season 2. the problem isn't even the anime adaptation, it's the source material.
the shonen fight against mr. subarshii: lame.
the writing in season 2: sad.
normally I would start reading the manga after watching a great anime, but not after what happened in season 2

To be honest, Made in Abyss suffers from the fact that it only gets about two new chapters each year lately. It's so rare you forget what's happening. The first season was good, the second less so.

I agree with you given the recent increase in wait but I've been finding the good in long waits in that it feels like a special occasion. It also makes me look for all details I can much closer, since I tend to re-read the same chapter many many times.
