Isn't sad that they are the only fansubbing group that exists for most anime these days.

It's sadder - they're not a fansubbing group, they just rip from crunchyroll à la HorribleSubs, Erai, etc.

Horrible!!
It used to be that there were many people taking a part several animes back then and now, we rarely get any people do anything special for certain shows.

>How come no one fan subs anymore?
Because fansubbing is a ton of work and effort, requires a group of people with various increasingly-rare skills, and takes significantly longer to go from "airing in Japan" to "released" (days VS minutes)
Anime watchers decided around 10-15 years ago that they preferred speedy releases over quality releases, and this is the end result

perhaps the quality of anime has decreased and the effort is not worth the result?

This, and when something actually good like Medalist comes out it usually gets fansubbed with excellent typesetting. Fansubbers these days are a bunch of discord faggots that spend 100x more time ERPing with each other than watching anime though and it will show in the translation (no honorifics, making retarded TL choices like "goober" instead of just adding a small TL note) but that's easy to fix with a subtitle editor.

They were IRCfags before dicksword, so not much has changed there. Over-localizations and "trollsubs" were a big problem even in the heyday of fansubs - every season you had to research who was translating a show seriously VS who was using it to be shitty internet comedians

>no honorifics
english doesn't have honorifics.
>making retarded TL choices like "goober" instead of just adding a small TL note
i've seen fansubbers completely rewrite jokes to make them fit the english language better, and others that use a more direct translation + TL note, and i think both are good options. just depends on what you want from the TL, if that makes sense. personally i prefer the former because i wanna learn the language, and anything that explains how the language works is helpful, but that might not be the case for other people that just wanna watch fun cartoons. there's not really a right or wrong way to go about it, as long as the actual translation is accurate. i guess you just gotta know who makes the kind of fansubs you like

No I mean all subs should have honorifics (or optional en and enm tracks if they really want to cater to fags that don't like honorifics). But instead of arguing about honorifics there's a much more important debate to be had: Anya or Becky?

The problem with translated puns is all I think of when I see them is "I wonder what the original joke was", so they never hit.

Honestly, the modern day anime fan deserves trollsubs and the other bullshit they had back in the day.
I wasn't there at the time but I can only imagine the disappointment whenever you saw [gg] or Commie doing a show.

I don't think this is quite it. I started watching anime during the last fansubbing days and a lot of complete garbage had subs. It was the waiting aspect, mainly. People who watched seasonal anime didn't want to sit and wait while everyone else was in the weekly thread discussing. Then an overwhelming majority of the next generation started watching on that very same streaming service the subs were ripped from. There must simply be very few people for a fansubbing group to cater to currently.

Commie gets flak for "over-localizing" but that's just a stylistic complaint, they are still among the better ones.
Most old (2000s) fansubs were produced by people who barely understood Japanese, they'd just make up some fanfic based on the 30% of all words they got. If they knew English, you'd at least get a mostly coherent rewrite of the script, but rarely something that would pass as a "translation".
