Since about 2 years ago, you can just add a loading="lazy" attribute to <img> tags to make web browsers avoid downloading them until users have scrolled down to them
This is actually what Futaba Channel does on all the images on their boards, so that might be worth experimenting with if we ever need to seriously cut down on server load
This won't work on browsers older than 2020 however, but the few people using browsers older than that are probably using teh ancient computers with sucky internet connections to begin with
