There might be less "genes" involved and more cultural evolution, where "cultures" (beliefs, ideas and values) with brutality are somehow more likely to get passed on (like parents and communities are more likely to survive barbarian hordes and train children with a similar mindset).

That being said, surely you are more than just genes and the culture around you, right?
