before copyright it was a marketing strategy to gloat about how much you have given back to the original authors and plagiarizig was very shamed.
after copyright author have generaly earned les money from their books.
I feel that when you can easily sell an actual ownership of your story it easier to get pwned and ;
and at least early people kept pwning slightly similar things like mr marvel(shazam) v superman.
thankfully right now copyright is extremely weak so you can copy a concept and call it a different name and you are free to use it.
