If you're talking about electricity usage, it depends on how you make the electricity. If you run a data center off a coal plant it's definitely going to be horrible, but so is running any kind of appliance using power from a coal plant.

The actual energy usage for generating an image is very low from what I remember reading. I don't have the numbers on hand, but from what I recall it's on the level of watching a 5 minute youtube video clip (or lower).
