Am I depriving myself of joy by not allowing myself to visit Japan until I'm completely fluent in Japanese?
I don't want to go to any of the touristy places like akiba; I would if it weren't the current year, but modern otaku culture bores me and every retro video game ever made has been dumped online so there's no point in buying them at bookoff even if they're uber cheap. Plus if I buy toys/doujinshi suited to my tastes I'd probably get detained by the TSA.
Basically I want to interact with locals, visit art shows and hang out in divebars. Maybe peruse around a few thrift stores in more urban areas where the people generally don't speak english at all.
