what is the setting?

I ended up spending a lot of time on the fact that my MC is a Pokemon Trainer doing the Gym challenge (I did gloss over most of the actual fights), but they were connective tissue to ground the story into a whole, versus the story being entirely the MC going "I was pretty sure I was about to tear Minun in half, but the concept of understanding cause and effect was completely beyond me as I entered her. I drank Plusle's drool as my fingers danced inside of the red-and-yellow electric rodent." etc etc repeated like 10 times with minor variation.

fully free-standing chapters does make this harder, although you could make any situations the characters get into more episodic
kind of like how you don't actually need to watch hundreds of episodes of Star Trek TNG to enjoy an episode

how many characters do you have? more makes things a little easier when it comes to variety
