As artificial as Win11's hardware requirements are, the possibility and practicality of using the same machine for more than 1-2 major Windows versions (which used to be released much more regularly and did not auto-upgrade) only came about in the late-2000s/early-2010s as year-on-year hardware improvements slowed way down - so this isn't anything new
